The First Bank In Woodstock

By Mitch Biggar

The first bank established in Woodstock in 1836 was a branch of the Commercial Bank. The bank president was J.P. Connell and George F. Williams was the cashier. In those days of heavy lumbering transactions the bank was greatly welcomed.

Ten years later 1846 the first attempted bank robbery in Woodstock was attempted. The bank was located on the second floor of a building. The thieves tried to carry off the iron safe. In attempting this they dropped the safe down the stairs which created a great noise. The safe also dropped so hard that it became lodged in the wall and the floorboards. The robbers were forces to leave without any bounty.
