Celebrating Retired Racers

Fire'N'Flame was a sweet boy who had an uncommon life for a racing dog of his time. He died just before his 15th birthday, in 1994, and will always be missed.

Fire is one of the "Brindle Brothers" on the other pages of this site. He was the epitome of an adopted ex-racer, a rooing couch-potato who lived to snuggle up with his people.

FIRE, 5 MONTHS (1979)
At his first home, with the family who bred and raced him until his retirement. Greyhounds have a strong Furniture Instinct. The owners, who loved their dogs and sought good retirement homes for them, noted that this was his favorite place.

FIRE, 6 MONTHS (1979)
In the breeder's yard, with friends and family. Left to right, a Whippet buddy, Fire's brother (who raced even more successfully than Fire and moved on to a stud career), the boys' adorable and fast momma, and Fire.

FIRE IN 1983
As we first met him, about six weeks after this picture at another puppy match. Despite his apparent good health, his life was not a happy one with the person who offered a "good home" to this retiree. We learned the truth when he was given to us. Too many adopted dogs go through similar experiences. If you are thinking of getting your first dog, no matter what the breed or source, please, please, please (!!!) talk to people who work or volunteer at an animal shelter, first. Find out why some of the pets have come to them. Learn as much as you can about responsible pet ownership BEFORE you get a pet. (Thank you!)

FIRE IN 1988
At his final home, our farm, just resting in the yard and keeping an eye on us (and probably wishing we would put a couch in the yard like his favorite spot in the living room).

Please read about Fire on the "A Tail To Tell" link at:
Please note a correction to the essay. I was told that Fire's sire, B Whiz, was a Hall of Fame dog. I have since learned that B Whiz was not in the Hall, but *his* sire, Westy Whizzer, is.
