Humble Beginnings

Her birth brother, Ben one day brought home an askal and he called it DELILAH. Coh wanted her own so her Aunt Paning asked for a puppy from a neighbor's dog that had puppies to give away. Coh called her puppy, SAMSON. Samson died and she cried and cried until her nanny, Nanay Lydia gave her a book about dogs. From then on, she memorized the whole book from cover to cover and could recite the 100 breed standards in brief. Being a child then, her favorite was the picture of white toy poodle

She cried for two weeks until her father finally gave in and bought BAMBI. After Bambi, came Bambi 1 and Bambi 2. Coh's dad loved animals and she took after him in a lot of ways more than one. It was him who gave Coh her first purebred dog, a poodle bred by Mrs. Maria Rocio de Vega, one of the pioneers of the Philippine Canine Club, Incorporated and the Ladies Kennel Club.

When Bambi III died, Coh bought a Japanese Spitz, SODA POP out of her own savings because that was what her mere savings could afford from food allowance.

The second breed that she got into, also given as a birthday present by her dad was TABU, a Pekingese.

Tabu lived to a full 13 years. The two interbred and at one time, there were 23 mixed-breds running in their backyard.

When Tabu died, she bought her first pedigreed Shih Tzu, named SHAH from the late Mrs. Eduardo Topacio. Shah was the first dog that she showed but he turned out to be a cryptorchid after winning Best Baby Puppy. She then bought another Shih Tzu and another and another from her food allowances.

From Shih Tzus, she tried other breeds such as the Maltese, the Lhasa Apso, the Pomeranian. Her Maltese named NICOLE was trained to dance the tinikling (a Filipino Folk Dance) and was even featured in a TV show. During this particular program that a customs examiner was watching. One day, the officer was at the Salazar's residence and Coh's dad bragged about Nicole. The customs officer asked if he could have Nicole and Coh's dad could not refuse.

In exchange, a friend of Coh's dad gave Coh a German Import French Poodle named SUSIE. Because of the hurt from losing Nicole, Coh gave the standard poodle to her brother to spite her dad, being the spoiled brat that she was. She got her first AKC import instead Kennaquhair's Birthday Gift a.k.a. KNUCKLES.

When Susie died, Coh's brother bought a Dobermann. Unfortunately, CLAY didn't have a very good temperament so he was given away. Coh helped her brother scout for a Miniature Pinscher to replace the Dobermann.

In 1978, Coh was able to persuade her mom to buy her not just 1 but 3 Shih Tzus. Bai was her first BEST IN SHOW winner bred by an AKC licensed Shih Tzu Specialty Judge, Elaine Meltzer. The 2 others were from the Chumulari Kennels of the late Rev. Easton, author of the book This Is The Shih Tzu.

Lucianne Friedlander's formerly Penny Cham of Achilles Shih Tzus first Philippine-Bred Champion, ACHILLES JUNE PEANUTS was later on acquired.

Also during this time she tried the Dalmatian, the Dachshund and the Cocker Spaniel
While she was in college, she didn't have enough spare time for showing dogs

It was in 1984 when she got back in the show ring as a mere spectator of the sport, at her side was a Boxer named Bop-Bop.

She missed the dog shows so she bought 2 champion boxers, American and Philippine Champion Carstels Tillie, CACIB from Sabino Dytoc and Philippine Champion Bamboo Groove's Affinity, "FOOTNOTE" from Dr. Edwyn Chua.

Coh has always been fascinated with German Shepherds. Her first was a German import, Darling von Murrenhutte.

However, it was in 1985 when her kennel was hit by the canine parvo-virus and swiped out all her puppies. This made her look through the dog books and the Belgian Tervuren caught her eye. She started inquiring from breeders but she could not afford them. She then turned her interests in Rottweilers. In 1990, she bought a Rott from Wanda Louwallien and called her LUKA. She showed her a couple of times and was surprised how the world of dog shows has changed. She was the only owner inside the ring!

In 1993, Coh bought COBI for a friend to keep herl company who decided to start living on her own. Cobi will stay with the friend and when he gets too big to stay in a condo, he will be transferred to Sto. Domingo. This arrangement was ideal since Coh was still worried about the CPV. When everything was okay with the parvo thing, Coh started buying dogs right and left. After Cobi, came the Chow-Chows, then the Labs, the Goldens, the Neos and more Boxers and German Shepherds.

All in all, Coh has experienced owning and being owned by 29 purebred breeds and the non-registrable breeds: Toy and Standard Poodle, Pekingese, Japanese Spitz, Miniature and Dobermann Pinscher, Cocker Spaniel, Dalmatian, Dachshund, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Maltese, Pomeranian, Boxer, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Chow-Chow, Chinese Shar-Pei, Basset Hound, English Bulldog, Labrador and Golden Retriever, Belgian Groenendael, Australian Shepherd, Shetland Sheepdog, Neapolitan Mastiff, Rough Coated Collie, Schipperke, Pembroke Welsh Corgi plus the Askal, respectively.

Rem is a ONE-DOG-PERSON.  She had her very first dog, TIMMY when she was 6 years old.  The pair would run and chase cats, get into all kinds of trouble together along the Roxas Boulevard Coastal Area where she grew up.  Her second dog was named WILLY, another askal.  And had a Siberian Husky while she was in Newfoundland, Canada.  When she moved to the West Coast in Vancouver, her constant companion was a German Shepherd named TANK before she met Coh's Cousin, Eny.  Living with Eny, she missed the company of dogs and just dogsit Coh's family's Golden Retriever, COHJIE.  Now that she has moved backed to the Philippines sharing a life with Coh, she is constantly with Si-TARA, an Australian Shepherd.

Don't forget to leave your paw prints (or bouys) behind!
