One of Canada's worst natural disasters!

Here are some pictures taken in my back yard during the storm.

Typically we do see some freezing rain during the course of the Winter. However, this storm which started on January 5th, lasted for many days dumping nearly 5 inches of freezing rain on us. At least 25 deaths through hypothermia, carbon monoxide poisoning, fire and traffic accidents are directly attributed to the storm. An average size tree limb could easily weigh over 600 pounds. Estimates place the total cost of the storm between 1 and 2 billion dollars with the repair work not fully completed for three years. As of March 10, 1998, the Insurance Bureau of Canada estimates that in the affected areas, there have been 535,800 claims submitted, totalling about $790 million in damage to cars, homes and other properties.
