Colonel William Scudder was the proprietor of a large landed estate and of

"Kenneth Anderson....was an early member of Old Tennent church, and in 1749/50
contributed to the new church building fund. In 1799 he was an elder. His
wife joined the church Sep. 4, 1745. Tradition claims that he served as a
colonel in the Revolutionary army, but there is no such record. As Kenneth
Anderson, Sr., he received in 1781, 1736 pounds in depreciated continental
currency for services during the war, and presumably was the Anderson (no
'Sr.') who served as adjutant in the First Monmouth Reg't in 1777 and as
recruiting officer later the same year. The Adj-Gen has no other record of
service of any Kenneth Anderson."

states that Joseph died in 1760, aged about 50. Since his wife, Lucretia, was
born in 1737, they probably did not marry before 1753, when she would have been
16 years of age. They had thirteen children. So, either Joseph died somewhat
after 1760, Lucretia had another husband by whom she had children, or some of
the children listed by Cooley were actually grandchildren.

Colonel William Wikoff resided at Manalapan, Monmouth county, New Jersey, where
he owned a large farm. He was a colonel during the Revolution, and according
to family tradition received his commission from General Washington at the
close of the war in 1782. He was dispatched by General Lee to Mount Holly with
a detachment of troops, June 27, 1778, and was thus prevented from
participating in the battle of Monmouth. Colonel Wikorr was a man of large
fortune and eminent in his community.

As cited in Kellam's book, with a source of the Confederate Veteran, issue of
February 1927, Tam joined Company E, 3rd Confederate Regiment of Calvary, in
the Spring of 1862. At the time this unit was part of the brigade of General
Tom Harrison, Wharton's Division, Wheeler's Corps. serving in Tennessee and
Kentucky. Tam was captured at the battle of Chickamauga and taken to Camp
Morton prison in Indianapolis, Indiana. He escaped from prison on 14 November
1864. An account of his escape was published a few years ago (abt 1947) in the
Confederate Veteran. He made his way back South with great difficulty and
served in a company of scouts at Dahlonega, Georgia, and in front of
Chattanooga until the surrender. After the war, Tam went to Hill county, Texas

In the spring of 1765, Captain John Polk was residing on the vast Selwyn land
grant in Mecklenburg county, and was the author of a petition to the Governor
and Council complaining of the oppressive conduct of Henry Eustace McColloh,
Selwyn's Chief Agent. On "June ye 7th, A.D. 1766," we find John Polk enrolled
in the Clear Creek Company of Mecklenburg Colonial Militia, Captain Adam
Alexander commanding, Charles Polk (John's elder brother), being First
Lieutenant. By acts of the General Assembly, John Polk was a member of
commissions charged with the duty of laying out roads connecting the western
counties with the towns of Wilmington and Brunswick, the latter being the
capital of the province. These commissions were created by acts of the General
Assembly of the Province in 1766, 1771, and 1773. In 1778, while the
Revolutionary War was in progress, the name of John Polk appears as one of the
militia officers (rank not given) serving in Colonel Francis Locke's regiment
from Rowan county, that county then adjoining Mecklenburg.

Like his father, Jacob was a prosperous and influential Huntington mill owner,
expanding his holdings from the base of a one-half share of his father's mill
left to him in the will. In 1749, at age 42, Jacob sold his Huntington
interests and took his family to the Princeton area of Winsor Township [Winsor
Township is in the southern tip of Middlesex County; the family lived within a
mile or two of the Somerset and Hunterdon county boundaries. Since 1839, the
Princeton area has been included (along with Trenton) in Mercer county.], where
he purchased a complex of mill properties on the Millstone River known as the
Aqueduct Mills from members of the Davison family. The mills, later called
Scudder's Mills, were located on Princeton's Harrison Street, extended,
approximately where present US Route 1 crosses the Millstone at the edge of
Carnegie Lake. In 1749, the property consisted of two grist mills, a millpond
and dam, a fulling mill, a mill house, and 100 acres of land, for which Jacob
paid 1,400 pounds, then a large sum of money.
