Ruby's Slippers for Men or Women
This is actually my pattern I came up with looking at an old slipper my grandmother, Ruby Caneer had made years ago before her vision forced her to stop crocheting (she helped figure out parts of what she had done from faded memory). She didn't have a pattern and didn't know if she made it from one or came up with it on her own, she just knew she'd made tons of them from memory. Here's what I came up with based on her slipper. If it is similar to any written pattern out there, it is purely coincidental. It is my/her own creation based on something she made years ago, and still not identical to the first slipper. IT IS COPYRIGHT 2003 MARLA CANEER AND IS NOT TO BE SOLD AND MAY BE COPIED ONLY FOR PERSONAL OR CHARITY USE. SLIPPERS ARE NOT TO BE SOLD WITHOUT MY WRITTEN PERMISSION/APPROVAL FOR ANY REASON. I've found I like it better than any of the patterns I have found on the net, and still have not found a similarly made pattern.
This pattern I have written out comes out to a Men's Large (11 or larger) size slipper. For Ladies, it would amount to a lady's large (10-11). For a smaller man's or lady's medium slipper, decrease the starting chain by one or two chains. Instructions are included for Kids-Adult but you may alter as needed to fit.
Supplies Needed: Size G crochet hook, approx. 2 oz Color A, approx. 2 oz Color B (Coordinating color).
SOLE:
Girls' size 3-4 or Boys' size 1-2 and Ladies' Xsmall 4-5: Chain 21
Ladies' Small size 5-6 or small Men's 7-8: Chain 22:
Ladies'Size 7-9 or Average Men's Size 9-10: Chain 23
For all other sizes:Ch 24
Row 1: Dc in first chain (DO NOT CH 27 THEN DC IN 4TH CHAIN FROM HOOK- IT WON'T LOOK RIGHT) and in each ch across. 3 dc in end loop, dc in each free loop of chain on remaining side, 3 dc in end loop and join w/a slip stitch.
Row 2: Dc in 1st ch and in next 21 ch, 2 dc in next 5 st, dc in next 22 st, 2 dc in remaining 5 st. Join w/a slip stitch.
FOR GIRLS' 3-4 AND LADIES XSMALL (size 4-5) SKIP TO ROW 4. ALL OTHER SIZES CONTINUE WITH PATTERN.
Row 3: DC in 1st 24 st. 2 dc in next 7 st, dc in next 26 st, 2 dc in rem 5 st. Join w/a slip stitch.
Row 4: DC in each st. around. Join w/slip stitch to beginning dc.
FOR SIZES LARGER THAN LADIES' 9 AND MEN'S 101/2 YOU MAY ADD ONE OR TWO ROWS OF SINGLE CROCHET TO SOLE IF NEEDED.
Fasten off and join color B if desired.
FOOT:
Row 1 & 2: DC in top loop only of each st. around sole (top loop only instruction applies to row 1 only).
Row 3: DC to center 12 st. around toe, dc 2 together (decrease) in these 12 st. DC in remaining st. around.
Row 4: DC to center 6 st. around toe, dc 2 together (decrease) in these 6 st. Dc in remaining st. around.
FOR X LARGE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SIZE ONLY:
Row 5: Dc to center 3 st. around toe, dc first 2 decreases together, dc first decrease and next dc together, then dc rest of way around.
FOR ALL SIZES
Sew, whipstitch OR single crochet the first 15 (18 FOR XL SIZES) stitches of the opening from toe to ankle closed. You can do this in Color A or B and it looks great either way. I love the look of switching colors but it takes me longer that way.
ANKLE/CUFF (2 Variations)
Variation 1:
This option is the warmest.
Attach Color A in the front of the ankle near where you fastened off from sewing top of slipper closed.
Ch 28.
SC in BACK LOOP ONLY of second chain from the hook and in each chain and join to bottom stitch of foot. Slip Stitch in next stitch of foot, turn work over TO THE RIGHT, sc up the chain to end of chain, ch 1. Repeat all the way around foot until cuff is formed. Make sure you have 28 stitches in each row and adjust stitches if needed as you go along or you will wind up with a zig-zag cuff. Turn cuff down and weave in all ends if needed.
Variation 2:
This option leaves a few more "spaces" between double crochets, but is quicker.
Row 1: Slip Stitch into next space, Ch 2. Double crochet in each stitch around to beginning. Join with a slip stitch to first Double crochet.
Row 2-14: Ch 2 in same space as joining, Double crochet in each stitch around to beginning. Join to first double crochet with a slip stitch. Finish off at the end of Row 14.
Please Make as many pairs as you can of these in all sizes for citizens of Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. There is a 95% poverty level there, few jobs of any kind available, and the winters can produce temperatures of -30 farenheit, not to mention considerable snow and wind. To top it off, few have a source of heat. Any warm items you can send whether crocheted, knitted, bought or sewn are greatly needed and appreciated!
