Submission of photos to be included in this gallery will be appreciated. We are interested in pictures of individuals, family groups, places, and events. We are also interested in pictures from surrounding counties that once was part of Floyd County. Any pictures submitted and used will have proper credit given to the submitter.

GALLERY IV - PRESTONSBURG

Photographs of people and places in and around Prestonsburg, KY.

Photograph of the John Graham family Cemetery on the hill overlooking Emma. John Graham (1765-1835) began surveying the Big Sandy Valley in 1787, and he served as the land agent for John Preston from 1805 to 1835. He was Floyd County's Chief land agent, surveyor, banker, and trader for the first thirty-five years of its existence. For many years his store at Emma was the region's main trading post. Photograph showing the Johns House on Front Street as it was being dismantled in 1985. During the process, the log walls of the old Johns cabin were revealed. Henry Scalf told the story that General John Hunt Morgan paid a visit to the Johns family during his retreat from Cynthiana in June of 1864. He stopped there to rest and take a drink of water. Edward Arnold (1878-1951), Mayor of Prestonsburg during the 1915-1925 period, sitting in his office at City Hall. His wife was Victoria Davidson, daughter of Floyd County Clerk Greenville Davidson. Note the photos of Teddy Roosevelt and William Jennings Bryan on the wall. In addition to his duties as mayor, Arnold owned and operated a funeral home.
