SUMMARY HISTORY OF FLOYD COUNTY, KENTUCKY


Floyd County was formed by the Kentucky Legislature December 13, 1799 from parts of : Flleming, Montgomery, and Mason Counties. The legislation forming Floyd County was effective June 1, 1800. The county was named in honor of John Floyd, a surveyor and pioneer. Floyd County is located in the Eastern Coal Field of Kentucky. Originally Floyd County contained 3,600 sq miles. Between 1806 - 1884 all or parts of 15 counties were formed directly or indirectly from the original Floyd County.

The County Seat was originally Preston's Station, which was later renamed Prestonsburg. There are five incorporated towns in Floyd County: Prestonsburg, Allen, Wayland, Martin and Wheelwright.

Colonel David Morgan, From Pittsylvania Co., VA. Revolutionaly War Solider. Died October 13, 1815. Wm. C. Morgan, died October 13, 1815. William was the Son of David Morgan. Monument erected by A. J. Davidson in 1932.Both men were buried together, their grave is located in the old section of Davidson Memorial Gardens. While not a memorial in the sense of the preceeding memorials, this marker remembers and honors one of Floyd County's veterans of the Revolutionary War. For a larger view click here.
