Information obtained from "A Source Book on the WRECK OF THE GROSVENOR", published by The Van Riebeeck Society, Cape Town in 1953. Compiled and edited by Percival R. Kirby, M.A., D.LITT., F.R.C.M., F.R.A.I. (Formerly Professor of Music and History of Music, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg). The "GROSVENOR" was an East Indiaman that departed Madras on the homeward voyage to England. The vessel left Trincomalee, Ceylon, around June 1782. On the 4th of August the vessel was wrecked near Port St John on the South African coast. There started a most remarkable fight for survival which took every twist and turn that one could imagine, from attacks by natives to being 'pressganged'.
