Marietta Schools Foundation A brief history The Marietta Schools Foundation was incorporated in June 1983 for the purpose of promoting educational achievement and excellence among the students, faculty, staff and administration of the Marietta City School System. The Foundation is governed by a 50 person Board of Directors that feels that the best way to fulfill our purpose is to recognize and reward outstanding students, teachers and administrators. In addition, the Foundation has established funding guidelines and procedures in order to respond to the specific needs of teachers and administrators. Outstanding students are recognized and rewarded with scholarships provided by the Foundation through several scholarship funds that have been endowed specifically for this purpose. Teachers of the Year, representing each school in our district, are recognized and rewarded with cash awards. The best teacher in each grade, Kindergarten to 8th grade, and the best teacher in each department at Marietta High are given cash incentives for outstanding performance. The Foundation also recognizes and provides cash incentives for outstanding performance by school administrators. Scholarships for students, cash awards for Teachers of the Year, and incentive compensation for our Best Teachers are all provided on an annual basis. In addition the Foundation has funded many projects through the years, the most visible of which include: Ben Wilkins Memorial Garden Burke Research and Media Centers Edna P.Lee Career Center French Johnson Field Charlie Minor Trophy Case Birney Memorial Garden In 1992, the Foundation published the first 100 year history of the Marietta School System entitled, Centennial Celebration. The Foundation established the Marietta High School Alumni Society and appointed the first slate of officers. In 1994, the first Marietta High School Alumni Directory was published, and it will continue to be updated and republished every five years. Through the generous contributions of alumni, friends, businesses and local authorities, the Marietta Schools Foundation is approaching an endowment of $1 MILLION in 1998. The vision of the Board or Directors of the Foundation is to help make the Marietta School System the BEST PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM IN THE WORLD, and we will continue to work toward that goal as we start to raise the second million!
