Or he could be a really lucky droid...
Here's some conclusive evidence that the Force is with R2-D2.

C3P0 and R2 are able to walk freely through blaster fire on board Leia's ship (this same phenomena is seen throughout the trilogy)Picture

The escape pod by which the droids escape is allowed to go simply because there were no lifeforms on board. Please! What kind of bloodsucking Empiral Slaves wouldn't use that opportunity for a little target practise?

When it seems that Uncle Owen is not going to purchase R2-D2, the red R2 unit spontaneously has a "bad motivator". Coinsidence? I think not! Picture

R2 played only segments of Leia's hologram because he knew who Luke was and sensed the Force was with him. This peaked Luke's interested and motivated him to come on the mission. It was all part of the plan... Picture

While Ben and Luke are in the Cantina, the droids hide behind a locked door from the Storm Troopers. The Troopers try once to open the door and give up rather untypically. This is where I believe R2 uses the mind trick on the dense beasts

Luke's the only one to come out of the big fight at the Death Star(with some exceptions for those who coughed out early...WEDGE!) And who was in the X-Wing? R2-D2!!!! Picture

DOUBLE MEANING: When persuing Luke at the Death Star battle, Darth Vadar says, "The Force is strong with this one." He could be reading the combined Force "count" between Luke and R2. I love it!

When R2 is attacked by a swamp monster on Dagobah upon arrival. Who uses the Force to fly out of there!?!? R2-D2! Picture

Watch carefully for the tension between Yoda and R2-D2. There's some history there... Here's some speculation: Since R2 is a Jedi, but is also a droid he is not permitted to be on the council. R2 may have disputed this in the past, causing a great deal of resentment between the two Jedi. Yoda doesn't even invite R2 into his home... There more to this that supports my Yoda theory

R2 is also present during all or most of Luke's training and it is doubtful Luke or Yoda preformed any Force yielding task alone...

R2 responds with concern as Luke enters the dark cave on Dagobah. The little droid senses the evil as Yoda does..Picture

R2 gets locked out of the battle between Vader and Luke because Darth knows he is a threat and could help Luke out.

In the escape from cloud city, this Jedi droid simply rolls along infront of blaster fire, in plain sight and is NEVER hit! This is amazing folks! The Force must be with him!

As well, a simple turn fixes the hyperdrive on the millenium falcon...a little Force Chanelling here??? I think so...

R2-D2 is aware of Luke's plan in Jabba's Palace, but C-3P0 is unaware. The two are almost inseparable, so how could Luke inform R2 without Goldenrod finding out? A little Jedi communication perhaps??? Oui, oui! .Picture

THIS CLENCHES IT! As Luke, Han and Chewie are about to be executed by Jabba on Tatoonie, Luke gives R2 a sign for help. Translation: "Hey, can I borrow your lightsaber bud?" That's right! The "new" green saber is actually R2's own, which he has always had! Do you honestly think Luke is capable of designing and building his own? Yoda certainly didn't show him how to do it... A little fan art. Makes for an interesting discussion

More proof that this is R2's weapon: I own a R2 toy and it came with a lightsaber. Only Jedi are sold with lightsabers...

Episode I

R2-D2 is the only astromech droid working on Queen Amidala's ship that survives the Nemodian slaughter. How could that have happened? Picture

Somehow he makes it up the stairs in Watto's shop.Picture

Little Anakin Skywalker has some really great "luck" when R2's helping out as his astromech droid..."oops" for Anakin is quickly turns into "alright!"

Wait! This picture should be proof of it's own. The Jedi met in Episode I!!! How could Mr. Lucas let this one slip? .Picture
