Mrs. ED BARNES. Young Wife Dies After Brief Illness At Home in the Quinn Neighborhood. Last Friday night Mrs. ED BARNES was taken suddenly ill at her home near Quinn with what was at first supposed to be pneumonia fever, but later diagnosed as appendicitis and peritonitis and grew rapidly worse until Wednesday night about midnight death released her from her suffering. She was before her marriage Miss KATIE BRANDON, daughter of Mrs. ZOELLA BRANDON, and had she lived one week longer, until March 28th, would have been just twenty years of age. She was married to Mr. BARNES on her eighteenth birthday, one child blessing the union, a little six month old babe, which Mrs. BRANDON, the broken hearted mother of the deceased has taken to rear. The young wife was a consistant Christian, and died firm in the faith. Besides a husband, babe and mother there are three brothers and a sister left to mourn her death. She was a niece of E. I. HOLLOWELL of this city. The remains were interred Thursday at the burying ground of the Prospect church in Hopkins County. Caldwell Co., 1906.

H. L. PORTER, a prominent local citizen, died here this afternoon at 6 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. GEORGE MARTIN, at Greenwood. Mr. PORTER was 81 years of age and was prominently connected in this city and throughout the district. He is survived by five sons, E. T. PORTER, W. H. PORTER and H. C. PORTER of Bessemer, O.W. PORTER of Selma and W. B. PORTER of Camden, SC, and three daughters, Mrs. W. C. HOLLOWELL and Mrs. G. W. MARTIN of Bessemer, and Mrs. J. E. ROCKETT of Ensley. The funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from the residence of the son of the deceased, W. H. PORTER, at 1622 Clarendon Avenue, Bessemer. The services will be in charger of the Rev. GEORGE STOVES and the Rev. M. K. THORNTON, and they will be assisted by Mr. WALLES of Jonesboro. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Mrs. MATTIE HOLLOWELL DIES AFTER BROTHER-IN-LAW. Mrs. MATTIE HOLLOWELL, a sister of Mrs. HENRY E. HEWITT, died Wednesday morning at 7:30 o'clock at her home in the southwest part of the city, aged 68 years and 17 days. She was a sister-in-law of the late HENRY E. HEWITT, who died only two days before. Mrs. HOLLOWELL was a native of Kentucky. She leaves a son who lives in Kansas. Ther will be a double funeral for Mrs. HOLLOWELL and her brother-in-law, Mr. HEWITT, at the F. G. TTHOMPSON chapel at two o'clock Thursday afternoon of this week. E. R. MYERS will be in charge. DOUBLE FUNERAL WAS HELD HERE THURSDAY AFTERNOON. For the first time in many years a double funeral was held in Escondido Thursday afternoon, when one service and one burial were conducted for the late HENRY E. HEWITT and his sister-in-law, Mrs. MATTIE HOLLOWELL. The service was held at the chapel of F. G. THOMPSON, with Rev. E. R. MYERS in charge. Music contributed by Mr. and Mrs. EDWIN ATYEO and Misses EDITH CHUBBIC and HAZEL BRADBURY. Burial was made at Oak Hill Cemetery. A native of Pasquotank County, she was a retired general ledger bookkeeper for Fist and Citizens Bank, a member of the City Road United Methodist Church, life member of the church women, member of the Golden Circle Sunday School Class, charter member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, treasuirer of the Pasquotank American Red Cross for 25 years, and real daughter of United Daughters of the American Confederacy. Suirvivors include three daughters, Mrs. MARGARET COLINGSWORTH of Statesville, NC, Mrs. EVELYN MORRIS of Jackson, NC, and Mrs. HELEN KLEYLA of Washington, D.C.; a son DAVID H. SPENT YOUNG MANHOOD IN BLUE SPRING SECTION. DREW T. ROBERTSON, who spent his young manhood in the Blue Spring section of Caldwell County, just across the Trigg County line, died recently in Ohio at the age of fifty-six years. GREEN RITES HELD WED'NSDAY. A prominent resident of this community for many years, Mrs. CHAS. GREEN 74, passed away at her home near Mann's Chapel at 10:40 a.m. Monday May 12, 1941. Mrs. GREEN had been in ill health several years and seriously ill since last Thursday when she suffered a paralytic stroke. LILLIAN TEEGARDEN GREEN was born April 14, 1867 at Augusta, Kentucky, daughter of ISAAC and JENNIE RUSSELL TEEGARDEN and came to Illinois more than 50 years ago. On November. 11, 1890 she was married to CHARLES GREEN and since that time has resided on the GREEN homestead. Surviving are the husband and six children: Mrs. RUBY HARDY of Rossville; CHARLES RAYMOND GREEN and RUSSELL MCKINLEY GREEN at home; MARION L. GREEN of near Mann's Chapel, Mrs. LUCIAN RAY of Orange and Mrs. BESSIE KELLEY of Hoopeston; three brothers, WM. TEEGARDEN of Rossville, ROBERT TEEGARDEN of Augusta Kentucky, and CLARENCE TEEGARDEN of Cincinnati, Ohio; thirty grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. SAMUEL G. CRAVENS. S. G. CRAVENS Dies in Flint, Mich. After Accident. SAMUEL G. CRAVENS, 57 year old former resident of Princeton was struck by an automobile and almost instantly killed early Monday morning in Flint, Mich., where he had been living for the last five years. Mr. CRAVENS lived in the Cobb community before moving to Flint with his family in 1936. His body was brought here to the Morgan Funeral Home Tuesday. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at Morgan's Funeral Home at 2 o'clock. He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. BUTLER HOLLOWELL, Chicago; Mrs. AUBREY STEWART, Hopkinsville; Miss MAZELLE CRAVENS, Los Angeles, Cal; Mrs. F. H. CORPS, Los Angeles, and a son, M. D. CRAVENS, Ferndale, Mich. He also leaves a large number of relatives here and in Caldwell County.

Princeton, Ky. Feb. 8, 1945. NECIE ANN C. MERRICK. NECIE ANN CHILDRESS MERRICK was born January 16, 1857, died January 31, 1945 at 88 years of age. She was married to EZEKIEL MERRICK on May 22, 1878. To them eight children were born, one passed away in infancy. Those who survive are Mrs. FRED MERRICK, Mrs. JOCIE PEARL HOLLOWELL of Cadiz; ROY MERRICK, Mrs. ARCHIE BOYD of Princeton, WILLIAM THOMAS and CHARLIE of this community. A daughter Mrs. EDD FOX of Nortonville preceded her in death several years ago. She reared four stepchildren Mrs. AMBIE MERRICK of Trigg County, Mrs. DINAH SWATZELL of Nashville; both LEE and TAYLOR MERRICK preceded her in death. She professed faith in Christ in early age and remained a member of Blue Springs Baptist Church until her death. She made her home with WILLIAM THOMAS and was a kind loving mother to all. She was always ready to help and serve those who were in need. She leaves to mourn her passing 67 grandchildren 65 great grandchildren and 24 great great grandchildren; also one brother J. T. CHILDRESS of Providence. She had 5 grandchildren in service and 4 great grandchildren. Her grandchildren were also loyal and never grew tired of serving her. She was laid to rest in the family grave-yard near her home underneath a large mount of flowers. A number of nieces, nephews and a host of friends mourn her passing. Pallbearers were WILLIAM THOMAS, ROY, CHARLIE and DAVID MERRICK, CLINT MITCHELL and BRYANT OLIVER. HILLARY LEONIDAS DAVIS, Edenton, North Carolina, January 31 - Age 83, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs._____ WATSON, on North Broad Street, Saturday, January 31, 1953 after a long illness. A native of Currituck County, he had lived most of his life in Virginia until moving to Edenton. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Ocean View Masonic Lodge. Surviving are 2 sons, J. LEON DAVIS of Norfolk and JACKSON C. DAVIS of Washington, DC; 2 daughters, Mrs. L. P. WILLIAMS and Mrs. M. DAVIS WATSON, both of Edenton; 1 sister, Mrs. AGNES HOLLOWELL of Norfolk and 2 grandchildren. LUCY E. HOLLOWELL is best remembered for her work in education and genealogical research and writing. Born LUCY HINES ELLIOTT on January 9, 1895, at Eagletown, N.C., she was the daughter of JAMES THOMAS and ROENA HOWELL ELLIOTT. She attended Aurora Academy and Rich Square High School, graduating in 1912. She entered Chowan College in the fall of 1912 and received her degree in Education in the spring of 1914. She furthered her education by attending summer school at East Carolina in Greenville, N.C. State at Raleigh, and Woman's College at Greensboro, N.C. She began teaching in 1914 at Jacison, N.C. and went on to become principal of Webb School in Orange County, Old Trap School in Camden County, Hobgood School in Halifax County, Smith's Chapel School in Eureka, and Woodland Graded School in Wayne County. In 1925, LUCY married JOHN FRANKLIN HOLLOWELL of the Genoa Station near Goldsboro, N.C. After his death in 1933, she returned with her three small sons - JOHN, EDWARD, and HUGH to Eagletown to live on the farm. She returned to teaching in 1943 and taught in Northampton and Bertie Counties until 1953. Again in 1962 and 1963 she was called upon to teach French, Chemistry, and Physics at the Rich Square High School. One of her greatest pleasures was giving special instruction to students in various school subjects, and she was often called upon for help. Upon retiring from teaching full-time, she returned to one of her life-long interests - the tracing of family histories, or genealogy. She compiled and printed not only the history of the HOLLOWELL Family and the ELLIOTT Family, but also did much research to compile or help compile histories of the OUTLANDs, PEELEs, EDWARDS, and others. She assisted in writing a history of the Cedar Grove Meeting at Woodland for use in the observance of their bicentennial in 1960. Her final work was the book The Descendants of Dr. Samuel BROWN, which includes historical data on the formation of Northampton County. She died, after a brief illness on June 22, 1972. WOMAN, 62, KILLED IN 2-CAR CRASH. NANSEMOND - A 62-year-old Suffolk woman has been killed in a two-car collision at White Marsh Road and Hosier Road according to police today. Police identified the woman as EUNICE BUNCH HOLLOWELL of Route 2, Suffolk, who was dead on arrival at Obici Memorial Hospital. The accident occurred about 5:45 p.m. Thursday, about seven miles southeast of Suffolk. CURTIS TRUEBLOOD, 28, of Hertford, NC, was admitted to the hospital with head and facial injuries, police said. Today, he was listed in satisfactory condition. Police said the two cars collided in the intersection. MRS. HOLLOWELL's car was traveling east on Hosier Road, while TRUEBLOOD's car was headed south on White Marsh Road. (Ledger-Star, Friday, July 7, 1972).

DR. IVIE A. WARD, 94, Longtime Practitioner, Hertford, NC - Dr. IVIE ALPHONSO WARD, 94, retired Hertford physician, died Saturday in his home 211 N. Church St. A native of Chowan County, he was the husband of the Mrs. RUTH LASSITER WARD, and a son of WILLIAM CALEB and Mrs. ALICE HOLLOWELL WARD. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina, and received his medical degree in 1907 from Bellevue Hospital in New York City. He began his medical practice in Weeksville. Later he practiced in Belvidere and Elizabeth City before coming to Hertford. He was a life member of both the North Carolina and American Medical Association. He was a member and former deacon of Hertford Baptist Church, and a member of Red Men and Odd Fellows. Surviving are a son, W. JARVIS WARD of Hertford; two daughters, Mrs. RUTH ALICE SLOOP of Dublin, GA, and Mrs. MARGUERITE YEANS of Winston-Salem; three half-brothers, Dr. W. T. WARD of Raleigh, and T. L. WARD of Tyner; two half-sisters, Mrs. W. M. STEPHENSON of Pendleton, and Mrs. J. R. COOKE of Aulander; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was a civic, church, and county leader. A native of Gates County, he was the retired president of Hollowell Chevrolet Co. and was a real estate developer. SUZI HOLLOWELL worked for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Miles City for 13 years, then transferred to Fort Wipple Hospital in Prescott where she was the food service supervisor. She was nominated Employee of the Year at the VA Medical Center in Miles City and was an aerobic instructor in Miles City and Prescott. She was a member of the Four Square Church and loved gardening, baking and making candy. Miss HOLLOWELL, 33, died Thursday in Prescott, Ariz. of a heart attack. She was born in Livingston, a daughter of JACK and MARY HELEN JAKES HOLLOWELL. After the divorce of her parents, she moved with her father to Miles City where she attended school, graduating from Custer County High School in 1973, and from Miles Community College in 1975. Survivors include her father and stepmother, JACK and DONNA MAY HOLLOWELL of Miles City; two brothers, DAN HOLLOWELL of Miles City and STEVE HOLLOWELL of Hysham; and a sister, BOBI RAE MORTON of Fort Worth, Texas. SCRANTON - MARGARET DUNBAR BING, 94, of Scranton, died Oct. 9 in Cross Creek Health Care Center, Swan Quarter, where she had been a patient for several months. Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late WILLIAM HERTFORD and JULIA BOYD DUNBAR. She was the widow of EMMITT I. BING who died in 1976. Mrs. BING was a former employee of Virginia Public Service during the years she lived in Virginia and also taught school for several years. She was a member of the Swan Quarter Christian Church. Surviving are a sister, LUCILLE D. GRIFFIN of Elizabeth City, and several nieces and nephews. KOKOMO, IND. - Week of January 16, 1897. Death of a Pioneer. JOSEPH E. HOLLOWELL passes to the great beyond: Age 72 years and 5 months. JOSEPH E. HOLLOWELL, a pioneer of this place died this morning at the residence of his son, WALTER HOLLOWELL, on North Union Street. Stomach trouble was the cause of his demise. His age was 72 years and 5 months. The funeral service will be at the Friends Church at two o'clock Monday afternoon, conducted by the pastor Rev. LUKE WOODARD. Interment in Crown Point Cemetery. JOSEPH E. HOLLOWELL was born in Lawrence County Indiana August 19, 1824. He came to this county (Howard County) in 1852, settling first at New London. He came to Kokomo later and for many years was a prominent resident. He served several years as Justice of the Peace and held other positions of honor and trust. The latter years of his life were spent in Kansas, returning to Kokomo about a year ago. Deceased was a man who commanded the esteem and respect of all who knew him and the news of his death will be received with deep regret by a wide circle of acquaintanced. A wife and eight children survive, the children being CHARLES and WALTER of this city, SILAS D. and M.W. of Wichita, Kansas. N. L. of Hutchinson, Kansas, RUFUS of Argonia, Kansas, R. EDGAR of Chicago, Illinois, and Mrs. MATTIE ROWLEY of New Albany, Indiana. One of the absent sons N. L. is sick and cannot be present. Mrs. ROWLEY and EDGAR are here and the others are expected.

ELVIRA IRENE SMITH was born in Howard Co., Indiana, September 28, 1855, and died at Argonia, Kansas, July 7, 1927, age 71 years, 9 months, 9 days. At an early age she moved to Macon, MO., where she spent her early girlhood, later returning to Indiana where she was united in marriage to RUFUS HOLLOWELL. With her husband she came to Kansas in 1886 where she has since resided. To this union eleven children were born: Mrs. ETHEL HAWORTH of Argonia, JOE and CLYDE of Hutchinson, LEON of Conway Springs, GLEN of Norwich, (KS), D. H. and KENNETH of Syracuse, N.Y., RUSSELL and Mrs. H. E. BEVAN of Wichita (KS) and Mrs. MARIE FISHER of Macon, Miss. One son HOWARD preceded her in death in 1917. The husband and father passed away eighteen years ago and Mrs. HOLLOWELL bravely carried the burden of family and home, finding God's grace sufficient for her task. Only those who knew her best knew the secret prayers openly rewarded, the quiet faith that found an answer. She was quick to sense the need of those around her and ready to help in every good work. She was a consistent member of the Friends church in which relationship she will be greatly missed. She leaves to mourn her death her ten children, thirty grandchildren and a host of friends.
Mother, more than three score years and ten
Thou hast lived a gift of God.
Beautiful and blest those years So we bow and kiss the rod
That smites our lonely hearts,
Assured that angels still have care
O'er mother now at home.
Where day is cloudless clear and fair.
Funeral services were held from the Friends church, Sunday afternoon at 2:30, conducted by Rev. LELA GORDON. Burial was made at the Argonia Cemetery. Argonia Undertaking Co. had charge.
