On April 5, 1996, we were blessed with the birth of twin sons. Kenneth Avery was born at 8:26am weighing 3lbs, 4 oz. Nicholas Bradley was born at 8:28am weighing 2lbs, 14 oz. They were born at 31 weeks gestation, which is 9 weeks premature. In spite of their prematurity, they were both doing very well and we were expecting to bring them home from the hospital in about 4-6 weeks.
When they were 3 weeks old, Nicholas developed an infection which turned out to be Respiratory Syncitial Virus (RSV). RSV is common during the winter months, and to most people it poses no threat. But for newborns and premies, RSV can be devastating. Nicholas fought a hard and brave battle, but his little lungs were just too damaged by the virus. He passed away in his mommy's arms on May 9, 1996, after we had to make the heart-breaking decision to remove life support.
