ANNE, The Second Wife of John

While researching JOHN USSERY, I became interest in his second wife, Anne, who he married on Dec 23, 1797. She died abt. Nov 12, 1812 in Lunenburg Co, VA.

Except for the legal documents filed on her behalf, there is little information about Anne. I believe that Ussery’s were related through marriage to the Green’s, the Moores’ and the Gee’s.
For instance, on Aug. 2, 1794 Ussery Moore was listed as surety for William Pettypool and Katherine Moore. (The OLD FREE STATE, Vol I, by Landon C. Bell, pg. 392.) As Ussery is such an unusual name, one might want to use it as a first name if it was a family name, or the maiden name of the mother.
Another interesting theory is that on Dec. 23, 1797, a JOHN USSERY and Nancy Green were married in Lunenburg County. Anne is a nickname for Nancy

Last Will and Testament of Anne Ussery

"In the name of God Amen. I, ANN USSERY, being weak and low of body and knowing that it is appointed for all mankind once to die do make and ordain this my last will and Testament. First I will my soul to God who gave it. Respecting my worldly affairs, I give and bequeath to my beloved niece JINCEY MOORE one Negro girl named Sue* and all the rest of my property of every kind that I may be possessed of at my decease to her and her heirs forever. I appoint and ordain DRURY GEE Executor of this my last will and Testament. In Witness of all I hereunto set my hand and seal the 27th day of Dec. Eighteen hundred and four.

*At the time of her death, Anne made no mention of John's children inheriting her estate, nor were they involved in the witnessing her will. Her Negro woman, Sue, was the only property John bequeathed to Anne that was not to revert back to his estate at the time of her death. Anne bequeathed Sue to Jincey Moore, her niece.

At Court held for Lunenburg County the 11th day of Feb. 1813. This appraisment of the Estate of JOHN USSERY Senr dec’d was returned and ordered to be recorded. Test William Taylor-Appraiser: Benjamin W. Hite, James Neblett and John Williams.

The reason I placed this appraisal with Anne’s section and not JOHN USSERY’s (1-2) section is because I believe this property was Anne’s and the portion left to her by her husband was to revert to Samuel at the time of her death. Also, SAMUEL USSERY was the administrator over this appraisal, and it took place two months after Anne’s death.
