Hi, I stumbled onto your website looking for a different family line. But as I glanced at it I noted that Beverly Morris is listed in the household of William Usrey and Louisa Usrey in the 1870 census. You might want to know that Beverly Morris is Louisa Jane Morris Usrey’s half brother. Louisa is the daughter of William Crittenden Morris and his first wife, Eliza Maxwell of Overton Co. TN. Eliza died shortly after Louisa was born on their way to Carroll Co. Arkansas. Around 1842/3, William Morris married Asenath Fancher. Beverly was born around 1849 and Asenath’s last child was born in 1852. She died a while after that and her little babies and the children of Eliza were farmed out to different family members. One child went with Asenath’s sister who married a Kenner. Beverly stayed with Louisa who is only eight years older. William took off to Johnson County and died there.

Also, my grandfather’s brother Thomas Poyner Fancher (see Madison Co.) murdered Hugh Usrey in a family dispute around 1932. He did some jail time, but his son Glen was actually charged with the crime. Thomas Poyner Fancher was Hugh’s brother-in-law. Tom had married Blanche Usrey.

Query: From: Judy48@aol.com

I have been looking for a location for Mollie/Mary (Fureigh) Ussery. She married William M. in Colbert County, AL in 1881. I have a copy of their marriage certificate. The family (Fureighs and Usserys) moved to AR. In the 1880 AL census Mollie/Mary is listed as born in TN in 1866, but I have other info saying 1863. On the census her father is listed as born in Ireland in 1820 (he said he was 60). There was an older sister Julia born in TN? Three brothers were born in AL. I have been in contact with the Fureighs in AR, but we have hit a wall regarding John Francis Fureigh, his wife Mary, and daughter Julia (my ggm). Mary (Mollie's mother) died in AL in 1879 and is not listed on the census. In 1879 Julia married James Headley Coburn in AL. He enlisted in the 1st AL Cavalry in Murfreesboro at age 15. I don't know if this has any bearing, because Julia was James' 2nd wife. I appreciate any help or info about where to look for the Fureigh family. Thank you Judy

(Note: This enumerator listed relationships as servants when members of the family lived with relatives, as in case of orphans raised by other branches of the family. This Casey may not have been related, but you can't depend on it. The head of this household, according to my great-uncle Buster, was called "Uncle Buck" by the whole community and the son, Wm . M. was commonly known as "Bud". They lived in the same township with my Ussery family, but my great-uncle says there was no relationship so far as they knew. I am of the opinion that they were related, but it was so distant that they didn't know the connection. Margaret Ross, Little Rock, AR)

G. T. Garvey and Miss Annice Usery

Among the best-known houses engaged in the grocery business in Harrisburg, is that of G. T. Garvey, who, in connection with his store, conducts a restaurant, his business having been established in 1888. Although he is a young man, and has only been in business in the town but a few years, yet his name has already become synonymous with upright, honorable dealing, and his establishment is a favorite resort for those who wish to prosure the best brands of the articles he keeps in stock. He was born in the “Old North State” in 1861, was the younger of two children born to W. F. and Sarah (Burgess) Garvey, who were also born in that State. The father was a salesman in a store, but gave up this work in 1861 to enlist from Edgecombe County in the Thirtieth North Carolina Infantry, but died in 1865 from exposure during his service. His widow still survives him, and resides in Poinsett County, with her son, G. T. Garvey. The latter's early days were divided between farming and learning the painter's trade, his education in the meantime being received in the district schools of Halifax County, N. C. After reaching manhood he went to Baltimore, Md., but removed from there to Poinsett County, Ark., in 1886, and was first engaged in the milling business for D. C. Cole; he was married here, in December, 1888, to Miss Annice Usery, a native of the county, having in February prior to his marriage embarked in his present enterprise. He is a member of Lodge No. 3380 of the K. of H., of Bolivar, and is a Democrat; his wife is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He belongs to the Methodist Protestant Church, having his membership still in North Carolina.

William Usery, Blacksmith and Farmer

Tennessee has furnished to this county a number of representative men and among them might be mentioned William Usery, who was born in Bedford County, TN in 1832. He is the son of Allen and F. Elizabeth Johnson Ussery, both natives of North Carolina, and early settlers of Tennessee, to which state they migrated in pioneer times. They were members of the M.E. Church, William Usery was brought up as an agriculturist, and it was but natural that he should permanently adopt that calling as his life occupation; this he has always followed. He used his education in the common schools of Tennessee, and at the age of 18 learned the blacksmith trade, which he followed in connection with farming. In 1849 he came to St. Francis County, AR and worked at his trade for two years. He was first married in 1851 to Mrs. G. (Stephens) Fisher and one child was born to this union, Frances, who is now the wife of William A. Garvy and resides in Poinsett Co., AR. Mrs. Usery died in 1856 and in 1859 Mr. Usery selected his second wife in the person of Mrs. Roxy (Franks) Casbeer, widow of Joseph Casbeer, who was a native of Tennessee and a farmer by occupation. By her second marriage, Mrs. Usery became the mother of three children: Jerusha, widow of Frank Thiville, a farmer of St. Francis county, who died in 1886, leaving his widow and two children, Thomas and Chessley . Mrs.Usery is the daughter of Chessley and Jerusha May Franks, the former a local M.E. preacher of Tennessee. Elder Franks came to Arkansas at a very early day, and he married Miss May, a member of one of the oldest families of Northeastern Arkansas. Mrs. Usery is the 4th of eight children born to her parents, her birth occurring in St. Francis county, Ark in 1829. She spent her school days in that county, and after her marriage to Mr. Usery in 1859, they resided in St. Francis county for 13 years. Mr. Usery engaged in blacksmithing and farming. In 1872 he moved to Harrisburg and bought 460 acres of land, but has since sold some of this, and is now the owner of 300 acres adjoining the city, with about 50 acres under cultivation. He lives in the center of this, just across the corporation line. He has the best buildings, the largest orchard, bearing all kinds of fruit, and is considered one of the substantial men of the county. By his marriage were born two children: Florence, wife of a minister of the M.E. Church, and residing in Texas, and Annis, wife of George Garvey, a merchant of Harrisburg. Mr. Usery and family are members of the M.E. Church and he is a Royal Arch Mason. He is also a member of the I.O.O.F. He and his excellent wife can relate some very interesting reminiscences of early times, how timber was made with a ship saw, how the clothing and boots and shoes were made by the old settlers, and how Believer was at one time the county seat.

The following email is from "Louis Taunton" .If you have any info on this family please respond to Louis. Thanks!

I descend from the son of William Ursery -- John Boswell Ursery who migrated, along with his brother, William, to Union County, AR/Union Parish, LA (they join each other and they settled along the Arkansas/Louisiana state lines). John Boswell Usrey served in the Confederate Army from Union County, AR. and married Elizabeth Farrar in Union County, AR on 10 October 1860, Union County Marriage Book B, page 238. William F. Usrey married first Eliza A. Tatum at Joel Tatum's on December 18, 1857, recorded in Union County, Marriage Book B, page 187. She died and he married once or twice more.
John Boswell Usrey and Elizabeth (Farrar) Usrey were my great-great grandparents. Their daughter, Sardonia Jane Usrey (my great grandmother) married 1. George Washington Slater 2. Allen Davidson. My grandmother was Emma Slater who married Robert Judson Taunton, whose child was my father, Ray Taunton. John Boswell Usrey died 6 January 1906 and his wife died January 8, 1906 (both of flu) and are buried in the Sweet Home Cemetery near Strong (Union County) Arkansas.
