Joel (Ussery) Usry, the son of Sarah and Thomas Ussery, was born in North Carolina in 1802 and died on August 3, 1857.
On January 29, 1828, in Granville County, North Carolina, he married his first cousin, Susannah (Sookie) Williams Lemay, the daughter of Christian Ussery and John Lemay. Susannah was born in North Carolina on May 14, 1797, and died sometime after 1879.
Joel purchased 1,000 acres of land near Braisfield. At the time of his death, he owned 336 acres of land located on Beaver Dam Creek.
The 1850 Census for Beaver Dam District of Granville County, lists Joseph Usry, age 48, Susan, age 50. Others listed are: John, age 20; Catharine, age 14; Martha, age 12; and Samuel, age 11. The census indicates that Martha and Samuel have attended school within the year. It also lists Joseph and John as farmers. It indicates that all were born in North Carolina.
The 1860 Census for the Cedar Creek District of Granville County lists Susan, age 60, as the head of the household. It list her address as Milton, North Carolina. It also lists Martha, age 23 and Sam, age 21. It indicates that Sam was a farmer. It also lists each person's estate as follows:
Susan -- Value of Real Estate $856.00 Value of Personal Property $5,200.00
Martha-- Value of Real Estate $280.00 Value of Personal Property $ 2,100.00
Sam-- Value of Real Estate $320.00 Value of Personal Property $1,700.00
The 1870 Census for the Brasefield Township of Granville County lists Susan, age 72, as the head of the household. It lists Martha A., age 32 and Samuel, age 31. The census indicates that Samuel was a farmer. The value of Susan's real estate was $800.00 and her personal property was $270.00.
The 1880 Census for Brasefield Township lists Susan, age 83, as the head of the household. It indicates that both of her parents were born in Virginia. It lists one daughter, Martha A., age 42; one daughter in law, Adeline, age 41; one granddaughter, Martha, age 8; and two grandsons, William, age 7 and Eugene, age 5.
Issue:
1. Thomas Allen Usry was born in Granville County, on October 18, 1828, and died sometime between 1860 and 1871. According to the 1860 Census, Thomas was a wheel wright.On November 5, 1852, in Granville County, he married Mary Ann Harris. Mary was born in North Carolina about 1830.
2. John Christian (Jack) Usry was born at Oxford, North Carolina, in 1831 and died in 1914. According to the 1860 Census, John was a farmer. John married Elizabeth Preddy in Granville County in 1851.
3. Catherine Arabella (Puss) Usry was born about 1835 in Granville County. She married, first, Elias Thomas Husketh, on January 16, 1857, and, second, W. J. Mitchell.
4. Martha Ann Usry was born in Granville County about 1836. She married Tom Harris.
5. Samuel (Sam) Williams Usry was born in Granville County on May 14, 1839, and died on February 18, 1876. On December 22, 1876, in Granville County, Sam married Sarah Adeline Suit . They are both buried at Banks Methodist Church.
