Claim for Widow's Pension:

Elizabeth Usery, widow of John Usery Capt. Brittain's Co., Col. Welborne's Regt. 10th U.S. Inf. Resident of Wilkes Co., N.C. (Hunting Creek), Enlisted August 1812; discharged Feb. 1813

William Combar, age 96 and Benj. Tedder, 73, testify that Usery enlisted in August 1812 and was discharged in Feb. 1813 and both saw him frequently in the service for four or five months. E. Anderson, age 73, says he knew deceased soldier one or two years before he enlisted, saw Usery in the line of duty at the barracks at Wilkesboro, that he left the barracks with the soldiers and was gone 4 or 5 months. Thomas Gentle says he was in the same regiment, 10th U.S. and knows that Usery served 14 days or more. Ephraim Cook in 1858 testifies that he was personally acquainted with John Usery who enlisted in Capt. Brittain's Company, 10th U.S. Infantry in Wilkes Co., NC and marched to Asheville, Buncombe Co., then to Salisbury, N.C., and did serve at least three months and that he, Ephraim Cook, belonged to the same company.

Soldier died April 1865. Date and facts established by affidavits of Irvin Reed and Leander Riddle.

Marriage to soldier prior to Feb. 17, 1815, established by affidavit of John T. Riddle age 90, who testifies that he was personally acquainted with John and Elizabeth Usery, and the he was present and saw the said John and Elizabeth Usery joined together as man and wife, which took place in the month of December about Christmas 1813.

Rebecca Anderson testifies that she was present and saw them, John and Elizabeth Usery, joined together as man and wife, which took place at the residence of her grandfather, Isaac Norman, in the month of December just after Christmas during the War of 1812.

Admistted April 13, 1875, to a pension of $8 per month.

Wilkes County, N.C., 26 June 1872, George H. Brown, Clerk of Superior Court: Elizabeth Usery, aged 84 years, resident of Wilkes County, N.C., declares that she is the widow of John Usery who enlisted in Capt. Brittain's Company, 10th Regt. of Infantry, at Wilkesboro,N.C. 1st August 1812 and was honorably discharged at Salisbury, N.C. in 1813. That she Elizabeth Shaver was married to John Usery on or about 20 December 1813 by Joshua Souther, a J.P., in Issac Norman's home in Wilkes County, N.C., and that her husband died in Wilkes Co., N.C. on 14 April 1865, and she has not remarried.

Treasury Dept., March 25, 1873: Name of John Usery is not on the rolls of Capt. Britten. John Usery enlisted in Capt. J. Robinson's Co., 7th U.S. Infantry on 10 October 1814 for the war and served until 8 April 1815 when discharged.

Affidavit of William Coombs, R., aged 95: That John Usery was recruited by Wiley Gorden and placed in the 10th U.S. Infantry under Capt. Britten and was discharged from the service at Salisbury, N.C. in consequence of a sore leg.
