Montgomery Co., NC USGenWeb site
In 1777, William Ussery , his sons WELCOME and THOMAS , and his brother JOHN USSERY , signed a petition to have a new county formed or to have the present courthouse relocated. The
PeeDee River was dividing the county making it very difficult to the
inhabitants to travel to the courthouse. As a result of their efforts a
new county was formed and named Montgomery, in honor of General Richard
Montgomery, who was a distinguished officer of the Revolution, and who
fell fighting her battles in his heroic attack upon Quebec, 31 December
1775.
In 1779 Montgomery County was formed from Anson County.
Unfortunately, the Montgomery County courthouse records suffered through
three disastrous fires, the most destructive occurring in 1835, so the
information on the citizens of that county is limited. From what has
been researched, it is apparent that William and his family took a very
active role in their community.
Others are as follows:
Peter Ussery, Oct 15, 1783 for thirty pounds specie
Thomas Ussery, Sept 5, 1872, twelve pounds, ten shillings
William Ussery, June 25, 1783, four pounds
William Ussery, Dec. 2, 1783, twenty pounds, five shillings.
