South Carolina Court Records


South Carolina was first colonized about 1671 on the Ashley River in the Southeastern part of the state. The first Ussery records of SC are dated 1772. One unfortunate fact is that between 1778 and 1911 no marriage bond or license records were required. In 1769, the province of SC was divided into seven judicial districts. Townships were added in 1795. In 1798 the nine districts were divided up into twenty four districts or counties. (Usry Bul #8)

Hi, Just recently in trying to find the name of the husband of my direct ancestor Lovell Miller I came across your Ussery site. Lovell Miller had many brothers and sisters among them a Mary Miller born c1826 according to a family Bible. Her father's will of early 1850's referred to her as Mary Ussery. On the 1850 Lancaster Co SC p158 census we have found C Usery/Ussery age 27 [b 1823] listed as a school teacher M Ussery age 25 [b1825 we believe this is Mary] G F Usery age 1 But of course the 1850 Lancaster Census p18 in the hh of DM Usery had a John Usery age 18 and the 1860 Lancasterp 210 lists in the hh of D M Ussery John C Ussery age 28 [b 1832] school teacher On the 1860 Lancaster Co SC p189b census we found Sarah C Ussery age 8 living in the hh of her aunt and uncle J. A. & Frances Bird 1860 Lancaster Co SC p 197 we found George F Ussery age 10 in hh of another aunt John & Mina Ann Cook We have conjectured that the Sarah C. and George F Ussery were both children of Mary Miller Ussery and the C. Ussery on the 1850 census and that possibly Mary had died after the birth of Sarah but where was her husband in 1860. The John C. with D M Ussery doesn't seem to fit as age is off and he apparently was with his father in 1850. But if he died in the war between the states that would explain why we've not found him on later census. A couple of the land transactions in Lancater co. listed on your site were also interesting: 1849 Calvin Ussery /Richard Terrell 1850 Calvin Ussery to Richard Terrell 1853 Calvin Ussery to Moses Hough as Mary Ann Miller Ussery's maternal grandfather was a Terrell. I am wondering if you could forward my questions to the appropriate researcher for this family in Lancaster Co. I would be glad to share the Miller family information I have with them if we can decide how this Ussery connects. You have a great site - easy to navigate and well laid out. Thank you for any help. The following is from a letter from Clyda Angeli, March 24, 1998:

Five surveys were made for Ussery's in the newly opened (1784) former Indian land North of the Saluda River. The first (B135) was surveyed for William (Ussery) in May 1785. The SC law at the time said that one must have lived in SC in 1775 for one to receive a grant of vacant 96 District land. When the land was sold we learn that his William was the husband of Judeth, and neither could write. This land was on both sides of Clear Creek of S. Tygar River.

William and Judeth sold part of this Clear Creek land in 1788 to Thomas Ussery. (Not clear on the relationship) These would be the William and Thomas in the 1790 Census. William and Judeth sold the remaining portions of this Clear Creek grant in 3 portions. The first in 1788 to William Pearson. The second in 1792 to William Stags and the third and last in 1792 to Noblet Johnston. Stags and Pearson are in the 1790 Census with Stags near William and Judeth and Pearson is very near a Robert Ussery.

The second (D212) was surveyed in 1789 for Bob Usry, 284 acres on Flat Branch of the Checharoa (same as the North Saluda River) on the North side of Hogback Mountain. No recorded deed in Greenville for the sale of this land.

The third (D178) surveyed in 1791 for a William Ussery was 116A on Terry Creek of Green River.
The fourth (D178) surveyd in 1791 for a William Ussery was for 160A on Usrey's Branch of Green River. At the time of these surveys, there was no line between NC and SC. So surveys by each of the States were made in what became the other state when the line was drawn in 1815. These two surveys after 1815 lay in NC. So, one would need to look at NC records of the history of sales of these surveys.

The fifth (D466) surveyed in 1793 for Thomas Ussery was 160A on both sides of Green Creek of the South Pacolet. This is the same remote area as Bob Usrey's survey except the South side of Hogback Mountain. This survey was elapsed. (Never granted to Thomas Ussery)

Obituaries:

USERY-- Roylee McKenzie Usery, 65, of Matthews died Thursday, February 4, 1999, at the home of her daughter. Funeral services for Ms. Usery were held Saturday, February 6, 1999, at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Grady Faulk. Burial followed in Sunset Memory Gardens in Charlotte. She was born August 28, 1933, in Scranton, the daughter of the late Leroy McKenzie and Lila Sullivan. She graduated from Kingstree High School in Kingstree and Columbia Commercial College in Columbia. She had retired after 34 years with the Department of Defense. She was a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church in Matthews and Mizpah Chapter No. 36, Eastern Star in Charlotte. Survivors are: one son, Wade N. (Neb) Usery of Stallings; two daughters, Sherry U. Griffith of Waxhaw; and Susan U. McConnell of Pineville; one brother, Richard McKenzie of Kingstree; and one sister, Elsie M. Swilley of Atlanta, Ga.
