Bike Trip Journal
Number 3
Wed.We (Danny, Philae the ranch owner,
her friend Janet and I) rode on horseback up to the high mesa. What a view!!! It
is 10,500 feet elevation. My horse, Lonesome had not been ridden in a
while and had somewhat of a mind of its own! At one point, he took me though a
tree that had fallen over the path he went under it, but I went into it!!! I
did not fall off and only got a small scratch on my stomach. Hehehe. We also got
to do some laundry today!!! Yea!!! Later in the day, I weeded some roses for
fun. Danny was being the hunter and trying to get a chipmunk with a 22
pistol, but didn't bag one. The night before, I saw something swimming in the
pond and asked Philea what it was. She handed me a shotgun and said it was a
muskrat and to shoot it. I got it, but she then took the shotgun and got it
again! Danny then had the job of getting it out of the pond and throwing it in
the bushes away from there. Yuck!
17th: We
left the ranch and followed a route that Philae had given us. It was a beautiful
ride through the mtns of S. Colo. and even went by a ski area. It also took us
by some old towns with very old churches (Truches and Trompas) in which the
walls were made out of mud and straw. They were really neat. We then rode to
Taos, NM., Santa Fe, NM and on to a campground west of Albuquerque.
The campsite was only $8.95 per night (the one in Colo Springs was $30.00!)
Danny usually sleeps on a picnic table and this one was very uneven and wobbly!
The site was also near a highway that had traffic all night.
18th: This morning we missed our turn, as usual, and went to a Wal Mart to pick up some supplies then washed the dust off of the bikes from the dirt roads. From there we went to Gallup, NM and rode some on Rte 66. Gallup will be remembered for the great Golden Coral buffet and our 1st mishap. After eating lunch, we got on Rte 666 to get gas and as we were leaving, Danny caught one of his pegs on the pavement, it flipped the bike on its side and it slid toward the oncoming traffic! My sunglasses then mysteriously broke! We drove to another Wal Mart to get more sunglasses and while waiting for me, a drunk came up to Danny and pestered him the whole time! We finally got on the road to Flagstaff. It was over 100 degrees and we had to stop every 40 to 50 miles for water. That night, we got to Flagstaff where we were staying with my cousin Kim and her husband David and their 2 sons (Jens - 3 and Van [Vanduesen] - 7)
I tried to use Kim's computer and found it was worse than Philae's which was very old and slow. Kim's is possessed! ;-) It works for a few minutes then crashes taking all your data with it! I started this news update, but I am now on a library computer getting it done on the 21st. Today, we ran more errands - had to get an oil filter for both bikes and new sunglasses for me since mine mysteriously broke when Danny's bike accident occurred. Well these are actually the 2nd pair I have gotten. The 1st pair rode up my face in the wind and these rattle!!! We then headed down to Sidona. It is a beautiful area with red colored rocks and incredible rock formations. We were not sure if we could drive down the canyon drive since it had been closed because of a fire hazard. It is now reopened, but they are questioning everyone that goes down - but not us! We had a good barbecue lunch. rode around the area to see the sites and went to a Thomas Kincaid (sp) art gallery. That night Kim and I went downtown to an old hotel (the Weatherford that was built around 1850). We also saw a hotel that was in the Forrest Gump movie - Well that is all the time I have for now.
