Marriage license obtained from Paris (then called Pin Hook), Texas.

Josiah drove cattle to New Orleans and would ride with the cattle when

the rail road ran to Louisiana.

Josiah built a mansion on his plantation near "the Bluff." His marriage

certificate was secured at Paris (then known as Pin Hook). The marriage to

Louisa was performed by Rev. Joe Bishop, a Primitive Baptist minister.

"Sketches From Hopkins County History" places Josiah's birth "west of Red

River in what was then called Arkansas" but I believe Mrs. Wright has Josiah

confused with the many (at least 3) other Josiah Greggs which were floating

around in Hopkins County around the same time.

Notes for JESSE MARTIN LAYNE:

Jesse Martin Layne graduated from Roanoke College with a degree in

L.L.D. He practiced law all of his life. In early 1870's, he was sent to

Texas on business where he met his wife Susan Jane Gregg. Jesse's two

eldest children were born there and then the family moved from Texas to

Virginia and then subsequently to West Virginia. The 1880 Census reflected

that he had a servant. Jesse was always active in politics. He was elected

mayor of Huntington, West Virginia several times, a judge of municipal and

superior courts. Jesse was a director of the West Virginia State Asylum for

the Insane. During Cleveland's first administration, he was placed upon the

Western Land Commission and spent much time in California and other western states. Despite his traveling, he maintained his residence in Huntington, and all of the rest of his children were born there.

Jesse's son, Gregg had vivid memories of Huntington when he wrote to his

sister, Kate, on Sept. 26, 1943. Gregg said:

" Yes, I remember our home in Huntington vividly, even to the fire-flies

in bottles out on the sidewalk in front of our home in the long summer

evenings. I remember standing at the upstairs front window and watching

thunderstorms in the hills across the river on the Ohio side. I remember the

river, father taking me down, squatting down beside me, with one arm around

me, and watching the river flow, drift wood going sluggishly by. I remember

the hill back of us, but only once did I go down it, between two of you girls.

You remember I had my velocipede before we left Huntington, and I remember riding up and down the side walk in front of our house and the Davis's and on to the Cullen's one way and down to the little girl's house I was married to in that mock wedding at the church. It was at her house I first tasted coffee. They allowed her to drink coffee with cream in it for breakfast.

What was her name? They lived on past the Davis house almost to the corner.

I remember the Zeiglers quite well, and how nice they were to me when father

died. I remember Mrs. Wolfe (and Mr. Wolfe) and their store. I remember the

Episcopal church across the street. I remember the ox teams pulling logging

wagons along our street and I remember the circus parades that passed our

house. I remember the mound in our front yard, the side yard with its lawn,

the apple tree out toward the side fence of that yard and under it Mary had

bleeding hearts. I remember the cherry tree by the smoke house, and I

remember the morning the hired girl ran in to say there was a man out near the back fence in the yard, and father getting up and going out to meet the

challenge when a gray cow rose up and made off.

I have a faint idea of some poor people that lived in the alley back of us, though that might be imagination. I remember the Mickeys, and their phaeton. The beaches, and mother taking me down to look at Harry Beach after he had died. I remember the pump on the back porch, and playing with Edith Davis every day. I remember taking a ride with father in a livery rig (with a white horse) to Ceredo one day. I remember the Guyandotte River at flood gushing its muddy water under the bridge Mary and I stood on. I remember the cemetery quite well, and fathers large granite block, just like one I saw in Silver City, New Mexico, a couple of years ago with but one word on it L A Y N E-- and that was a shock, for it was almost identical to father's and no other name on it but L A Y N E."

"The flood of memories that come over me when once they start --- Robinson'

Floating Palace--- the performing Canary Birds, the alligator, inert in a

shallow sort of tub. And Robinson's Circus, father putting me on a pony's

back while he talked to the manager (probably because he was mayor) I remember visiting school with Mary and sitting with Norma Keenan, and one Christmas morning getting up in the dark to sneak over to find my chair, and getting an orange out of it, getting back into bed with it, mother taking it away from me when I was waked in the morning. And, as if it were yesterday, I remember Mrs. Gibson bringing Jessie out in a washbowl the day she was born to show her to me."

The Layne's were enumerated in the 1880 Census - Jesse was 31, Susan was 28, Mary 6, Eva 4, and Katie 3.

While on his death bed, Jesse was elected to the state legislature.

Jesse died of Typhoid Fever brought about because of the Johnstown Flood. He was an ardent Democrat all of his life, and he believed it to be a disgrace

for a Southerner to be otherwise!

Notes for JOSEPH GREGG LAYNE:

J. Gregg Layne emigrated to Pomona, California from Huntington, West Virgina with his Mother and sisters after his father's death in 1890 to be close to where his maternal grandparents (Josiah Gregg and Louisa Jane Hargrave) resided.

Writing about himself and explaining his being "pampered and spoiled because of his being the only son," he said: "I decided Pomona High School was no longer good enough for me, and that I must go to Los Angeles. So in 1901, I came to this city and entered Los Angeles High School in the third high-school year. I had a misunderstanding with a teacher and rather than apologize for a fancied wrong, I quit school in 1903, two weeks before I would have graduated."

As can be readily seen from the following extract, Gregg (as he was known) did not let this experience affect his future. He met Artemisia while visiting

Catalina Island. At the time of their marriage, he was a Traveling Salesman of Scientific Instruments (read: Thermometers) and she was a School Teacher.

Gregg's occupation at the time of his 2nd sons birth was listed as "Manager Mathematics". His death certificate lists Gregg's occupation as "Historian, UCLA Library."

The newspaper article which announced the death of J. Gregg Layne pronounced him "the country's foremost authority on California history (San Francisco Examiner, Aug 19, 1952, p3).

At the time of his death, he was curator of Western Americana at the University of California, Los Angeles library.
