GREGG ANCESTORS
Our family genealogists are all working together on our research. We have been unable to find the parents or siblings of our
James Gregg born 1790.(Our bible records say he was born in Pa. but a news article on his son Simon listed his parents born in SC.)
If anyone out there thinks they might have a clue we would love to hear from you.
WHAT WE KNOW:
He married Catherine Crum(Crumb).
They had 5 or possibly 6 children.
(1) Nancy Gregg, born 1811,married Michael Spidel.
(2) Simon Jacob Gregg born 1819 in Adams co. Pa. died April
17, in Belville, Kansas.Married Catherine McCormick.
(3) George Washington Gregg born March 26, 1820 in Pa. died
March 30, 1906, Akron, Ohio. Married Harriet Hartong.
(4) Eliza Ann Gregg born 1822, married Issac Hawks June 9,
1846.
(5) Mary Magdeline Gregg born 1824, married Thomas Wells
March 3, 1842.
(6)Catherine Gregg born 1827 married Abraham Shutt.
Samuel Bechtel a teacher was appointed guardian to 5 children after James death.
James purchased 100 acres in Jackson Twp. Stark Co. Ohio in June 1827.
James and Catherine were members of St. Jacob's Mud Brook Church.
Catherine married Wilhelm Humbert eight months after James death on June 26, 1828.
They had 3 children Julan 1829, Lewis 1831 , and Sarah Adeline 1834.
A possible clue we have run across is page 214 of the book Quaker Greggs.
It lists Simon Gregg 1736 (son of Richard Gregg and Anne Hadley) as having a son, Simon Jacob Gregg, who married Catherine McCormick.
The book is not correct since we know that Simon Jacob Gregg was the son of James Gregg 1790-1827.
Its possible James is a missing generation in the book.
Thanks for reading...
if you have any thoughts....
We recently found a page from a bible in the Pool family which lists a Mary Polly Gregg who married Bannister Pool
as having a brother James Gregg who died in 1827.

HERE IS ANOTHER GREGG ANCESTOR ON OUR WANTED LIST.....
Posted by Cheri Mello.
Looking for the parents and siblings of James GREGG b. c. 1800-1810 probably
in IN or OH. He first appears on 5 May 1825 buying land in Fountain Co, IN.
The land patent says he is from Montgomery Co, IN (the county to the east).
He marries on 5 Jan 1826 to Jane STEWART in Montgomery Co, IN. He next
appears as a constable of Richland Twp in Fountain Co. He then appears on
the 1830 Fountain Co, IN census. It appears that he (or his wife) have 2
sisters living with them. One family over is that of John GREGG who married
Jane MILLER on 10 Jan 1828 in Fountain Co, IN. This may be a brother of
James. On 9 Sept 1831, a James GREGG along with William TANNER were
witnesses to William POAGES's will. In May of 1835, James GREGG was elected
an elder of his church (Presbyterian). James GREGG (and Jane STEWART) had
the following children in IN: Harriet (1826), Samuel (1828), Sarah (1830),
James A. (1832), Mary Elizabeth (1836), and Jane (1837). About 1839, James &
Jane sell their land to the POYNER family and pack up and move to the
northern half of Clinton Co, MO. There they have Elizabeth (b. 1840) and the
twins William and Caroline M. (b. 1844). In Sept. of 1844, James GREGG
forclosed the former property in Fountain Co., IN on Mrs. POYNER (now a
widow). In 1845, James GREGG was listed in the first real estate assessment
of DeKalb Co, MO which was formerly the northern part of Clinton Co. MO. A
lawsuit on 9 Aug 1847 seems to indicate that James GREGG had died in April of
1845. Family story has it that James and his wife Jane died 6 months apart.
Jane was known to be alive at the twins birth on 3 June 1844. If anyone has information on this family, please contact Cheri Mello. Thank you.
