Bird was 72 when he died. He was a Justice of the Tazewell Court in 1833. In 1837 he was elected Commissioner of Revenue. In 1853 he was authorized to celebrate the Rites of Matrimony as a Baptist minister. Bird married Nancy McIntosh, March 17, 1803. To their union were born eleven children. Their first son, John McIntosh Lockhart, married Sarah ‘Sally’ McGuire on May 2, 1822. From their union came Martha Lockhart born March 17, 1824. She married Jeremiah Wilkerson Steele on March 11, 1845 in Tazewell County, Virginia.
A copy of the Family Bible was given to me by Harry Lockhart several years ago. I treasure it. As you can see from its contents my Steele family and this Lockhart family intermarried. As a direct descendant of Jeremiah W. Steele and Martha Lockhart I treasure the information so carefully written by Bird. I am thankful for cousins like Harry who share what they have so that others may find the golden leaves on their family trees. Using old Bible records helped me obtain a DAR number for Martha Lockhart. Any descendants of Martha and Jeremiah can use her number and their lineage to register with the DAR.
A special thank you must be extended to Dodie, who so graciously hosts this awesome website. Not only can you find some of those golden leaves but also stories that bring to life many of our ancestors. I like thinking of my ancestors as people who walked this earth, left their footprints all over it, and have somehow been rediscovered. Simply to know where they lived, what they did to survive, who they met and traveled with, what their joys and sorrows were gives me an insight and a firm appreciation for them as simple folk who often left their own footprints in our History Books as nameless, faceless people who contributed but have never been identified.
