"This is taken from an old post card of the 7&8 Mine Tipples. My father (Elwood) and grandfather (Les) worked for #7 mine for many years. I even still remember my dad's employee/charge # (7022) The tipple to the right (#8) is approximately where the current Holden school is located. Look below the back section of the #7 tipple on the left....You can see the first house starting at 7&8 (Diamond Camp.) There appears to be a pretty sturdy bridge across the creek with a culvert through it. I don't think it is there now. Also notice the very old car next to the building near the center. This must have been when Island Creek Coal Company hadn't been mining too long because as a kid in the '50's, I only remember 1 tipple on the left and the mountain ridge to the right was bald and the color of "red dog". It is green again today. I could see the ridge from my grandparent's house in Frogtown (1st house above the Holden Hospital.)"

This picture is priceless! Please allow time for it to load..
The "Old" Holden School-circa 1923

"This is only 1/2 of the picture. Does anyone out there have the entire picture or know who any of the children are?

All I know is that it was taken on the steps of the "Old" Holden School. The little girl in front row (2nd from right) is Ruth (Gore) Wilbur, and the boy in 4th row (2nd from right) is Elwood Mowery. They were both born in 1916, so I guess this picture was taken approximately 1923.

Any readers who have anything to add may e-mail me direct." Barbara Mowery
