At the end of this lane in the background is where the United States Post Office for Whirlwind WV was located for almost two years. Shirley (Bryant) Smith (my mother) was Postmaster. The post office was located in the corner of our country store, a small wooden building across the yard from our house. I do not know the location of the first Post office, but the one in picture below was the second (or third) post office, and the Postmaster at the store/post office pictured here was Jim Mullins. [information on Postmasters and dates of service was obtained from the United States Postal Service in Washington, D.C., and is available for purchase on microfilm at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.]
(Based on recent research, I believe this building dates back to circa 1910-1914 or earlier. I recently discovered that this is probably where the Whirlwind (now extinct) post office was located from 1914 to 1938. Sadly, this building is no longer standing. It was an historic landmark. Ron and I were there in the 1985 when this picture was taken. A cousin, who had a lovely home on the property said there was some of the old inventory still inside. She specifically mentioned shoes.
