Steels in the 1841 Census of Aucterarder
About the 1841 Census
The 1841 census was taken on June 7 and reflects all those individuals within the parish the
previous night. Listed are the names, ages of individuals (if 15 and over the age was
rounded following the chart below),
occupations, and whether or not (Yes or No) the individual was born within the county-in this case,
Perthshire. No information regarding kinship of individuals was recorded. I have grouped
individuals together as they were enumerated by household.
I've also included the descriptions of the districts as recorded in the
Census. There are references within the Census outlining the
local industry, individuals relocating to distant lands, and the
final count of the population. I have included this information as well.

Final Note- "After a careful examination and balancing of the probable of stranger who
slept in the Parish on the night of 6 June (????) parishonners who slept out said night I
find it about equal in giving the total number of persons in the (????) those who
may have slept in tents or open air in any of the district are not taken in but in
taking them (?????) I find the (????) population to be 3,434 being an increase of 252 since 1831.
There are 1738 females and 1696 males being 42 females more than males.
There being at present a vacancy in the ministry of this parish I
commissioned the resident Clerk of the Peace to certify in the
ministers stead.
We the undersigned hereby agree to act as enumerators for the
Parish of Auchterarder for the purpose of taking the
Census on Monday, the 7th June, and the following days under the
superintendence of the Person appointed by the sheriff as Divider of the
Parish.
