Sadie was nine years old this year. It hardly seems possible!
I remember her as a bright red weanling, she started to roan
the following spring. She's now a beautiful strawberry roan,
thanks to the genes of her sire, an Appaloosa with the same
coloring. Mom was a grey Arabian, so I figured it would be
either roan or grey! I think she got the best of both worlds!
Although she also inherited a stubborn streak from her sire,
along with the smarts from her dam to know how to use it to
her advantage! She only stands 14.2 hands, but is built like
the proverbial brick-you-know-what! Her gaits are comfortable
with a jog that doesn't rattle your teeth. I trained her in a
soft hackamore and moved on to a rubber snaffle, followed by
a D-ring. she's responsive with a mouth like butter. Sounds
nice huh? Add the stubborn streak, a redhead's temper, and
the agility of a rodeo bronc, and you have an "interesting" ride!
Sometimes, I'm very thankful she's on the short side!
This is where Sadie lives. She's the only splash
of color on a Standardbred farm! Everybody else is a bay.
She was banned from the broodmare band, so now she shares
her field with three sheep. As much as I'd like to have
her in my backyard, I know she's happy with her acres
of fields to roam in, and a nice box stall when the winter
weather turns nasty. Although she does prefer to be outside.
She tends to dig holes in her stall floor, and the standardbreds
taught her the joys of chewing on wood when bored!
This is a Lippit Morgan Stallion owned by a very good
friend. His name is Moro Hill Maverick. (available for
stud by the way!) I want one foal out of Sadie,
and have pretty much decided to breed back to Arabian
if I
can find a stud with enough height. But then there's Maverick!
He has the best temperment of any stallion I've ever
known, and passes that along to his foals, along with a classy
head and intelligence. I might not get the
extra height I'd like, but he sure is a looker and has a great
way of going. I,m just not sure how their conformations
would match up. Any opinions out there?
come and visit again!
