Leadership is Spiritual Coaching

As John Maxwell says, "Everything rises and falls on leadership."  With this truth in mind we ought to be motivated to not only be a quality leader, but to raise up quality leaders around us.  But as we know, leadership isn't just something that happens because we read a John Maxwell book or go to a leadership seminar.  Leadership is something that must be nurtured and developed through time and spiritual coaching.

Here is a sample of one of our spiritual coaching leadership lessons.

   Gal 6:1-5

1. Dear brothers, if a Christian is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help him back onto the right path, remembering that next time it might be one of you who is in the wrong.  2. Share each other's troubles and problems, and so obey our Lord's command.  3. If anyone thinks he is too great to stoop to this, he is fooling himself. He is really a nobody.  4. Let everyone be sure that he is doing his very best, for then he will have the personal satisfaction of work well done and won't need to compare himself with someone else.  5. Each of us must bear some faults and burdens of his own. For none of us is perfect!  (TLB)

Realization #1    Just because we are in leadership doesn't mean that we are immune to sin. In fact, the opposite is true. Those in leadership are actually targeted by the enemy even more. Temptation is more severe and subtle.

Realization #2    You are not perfect.  Whether you want to admit it or not, you have faults and character deficiencies. As leaders, we not have to admit the existence of these faults, but give God the opportunity to expose them and diligently work at correcting them.

Realization #3   You will never be as great as me. Now, of course I say this somewhat as a joke, but there is a principle there, although somewhat camouflaged. Here is my point. God has uniquely gifted me in a way that he may not have gifted you. There will be things that you will not be able to as well as me, just as there will be things that you can do that I will not be able to do as well. God does this for a reason ? balance and unity in the body of Christ.

Never underestimate the power of self evaluation.  You see, once we admit these basic truths we can better act upon the leadership principles that we read from Paul to the Galatian church.

1.  Leaders care enough to confront sin with a measure of grace.

2.  Leaders care enough to bear with other?s burdens and troubles.

3.  Leaders are humble enough to realize that they are no body without Christ.

4.  Leaders know that real satisfaction in ministry comes from giving their best and not by comparing  themselves with others

5.  Leaders don?t accept their faults or burdens but rather use them as a means to perfect and grow their faith.
