You can bring any submarine job to PNS and receive the highest quality work available. This shipyard can plan and execute any modernization of any submarine from the smallest deep submergence to the largest submarine utilized by the fleet.
PNS is and has executed modernizing programs for surface ships and is capable of docking most surface ship's that the fleet will be modernizing into the next century.
Location
Centrally located about 50 miles from Boston, Massachusetts, Portland, Maine, and Manchester, New Hampshire, at the southernmost tip of Maine, the Shipyard fully encompasses Seavey Island that sits at the mouth of the Piscataqua River. Directions
From the South, take Route 95 North into Maine. Take exit 2 (Route 236) to the Kittery Traffic Circle.
From the North, take Route 95 South through the York, ME toll booth and exit at Exit 2 (Route 236) in Kittery. Turn right onto Route 236 and enter the Kittery Traffic Circle.
From the Kittery Traffic Circle to Gate #1: take Route 1 South to the traffic lights. Turn left and proceed to PNS Gate #1.
From the Kittery Traffic Circle to Gate #2: take Rogers Road (exit after the Dairy Queen) past Osco Drug and down the hill toward Kittery Point. Gate #2 is on the right.
Size
PNS encompasses over 297 acres including the main base and a family housing site off base in Kittery, Maine. There are over 300 buildings with approximately 4 million square feet of space including 49 ship repair/overhaul buildings and three drydocks. Drydock No. 2 is a state of the art submarine overhaul and refueling complex with the capability of fully enclosing a submarine in a climate controlled facility. In addition, PNS has 6,224 lineal feet of berthing. The facility has a plant value for real property (structures) of $1.4B with plant equipment valued at $473M.
Workforce
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has three dry docks and is capable of docking all active classes of submarines including the Los Angeles and Trident classes. Portsmouth Naval Shipyard employs approximately 3,315 civilian employees and has a military population of about 50 officers and enlisted men and women.
