The Giant Chinchilla is the result of selective breeding, with an occasional Flemish Giant thrown in. Ed Stahl is given most of the credit for the development of this breed. Giant Chinchillas are one of the very few giant breeds that are judged on commercial value and their meat producing qualities should be given first consideration when judging. This is a six-class breed. Senior bucks weigh approximately twelve to fifteen pounds, and senior does weigh approximately thirteen to sixteen pounds. The Giant Chinchilla has a semi-arch, or mandolin, body type. The body should be moderately long, massive, powerful, and with full, broad for and hindquarters. The loin should be meaty, firm, and wide, with heavy bone. The top line needs to rise gracefully, with the arch starting at the middle of the shoulders, and continuing to a high point over the center of the hips, and carrying down over a smooth, well rounded rump. The hindquarters should be massive and deep, with shoulders and midsection to balance. A dewlap is allowed on does. The head needs to be large and shapely, and set firmly on the shoulders. Bucks need to have broader heads than does. The ears should be carried erect and thick. They should be in proportion to the size of the body and match the body color. Eyes should be bold. The feet and legs of Giant Chinchillas should be of fairly heavy bone, medium in length, strong, and straight. The front feet and legs and outside of the upper part of the hind legs need to be ticked with a shade of gray that should match the body color as close as possible. The color should carry down the thighs to a narrow strip on the outside of the hindfeet. The top of the hindfeet needs to be white with blue undercolor. The toenails on each toe need to be a dark brown; the darker, the better. The top of the tail should be black and sprinkled with gray-white hairs, and the underside should be white. The color needs to match that of a real chinchilla. The undercolor needs to be a dark slate blue at the base with a pearl intermediate ring, and the top edge being a narrow black band. Above this, there is a very light band that is brightly ticked with wavy jet black hairs to resemble the chinchilla surface color. The neck fur should be lighter than the rest of the body, but strictly confined to the nape of the neck. The chest is ticked lightly with a uniform pearl, slightly lighter than the body. The body color should extend as far down the sides as possible. The belly color, next to the skin, needs to be white or blue, and the outer color needs to be white. The eye circles need to be well defined and narrow, and of a light pearl shade. The eyes need to be brown.
