Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue

Our goal is to place unwanted, abandoned and lost Rhodesian Ridgebacks into safe and loving homes.

Our placement policy requires prospective adopters to have a working knowledge of the breed. Many people are attracted by the breed’s appearance, but have little or no idea of its traits or temperament. We urge all potential owners to research the breed; i.e. read about Rhodesian Ridgebacks, talk to other owners of Rhodesian Ridgebacks, attend dogs shows and visit breeders.

Interested adopters complete a questionnaire that describes the new environment in which the dog will live. Items include: family members and their age; other pets in the household; where the dog will sleep; what type of dwelling the family resides in; the size of yard; the type of fence; how much time the dog will spend alone etc. References are checked and a rescue coordinator interviews the potential adopter in person.

Owners who place dogs for adoption also complete a form, when possible, giving the personal history of the dogs. Information from the owners include: the dogs responses to people, children, dogs and other animals; level of obedience training, sleeping and eating habits etc.

Little or nothing is usually known about the backgrounds of dogs obtained from animal shelters. These dogs are not placed until we have personally assessed them. This assessment includes observing them and their reaction to adults, children, cats, dogs and their level of obedience training. These dogs are exposed to a variety of situations such as walks and car rides and are assessed for any bad habits, signs of aggression or fear.

Once the dog has been evaluated it is matched to a prescreened home whose family and living environment matches the dogs needs and personality. The new owners are solely and totally responsible for the dogs following adoption. New owners sign an adoption contract which outlines the terms of the dogs adoption. All available records will be furnished to the new owners.

All sexually intact dogs are spayed or neutered before going to their new homes. Dogs are also microchipped for identification purposes with the new family’s and the rescue coordinator’s information.

An adoption donation is requested when the dogs are placed to cover the costs incurred with caring for the dogs such as shelter fees, vet bills and spaying. No wages are taken from the adoption donations and all money goes to the Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue Fund.

Thank you for your interest in Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue. If you have any questions, please contact me at the above numbers.
