Sheep Wool and Fiber

At present, I have a small flock of Corriedale sheep,  all individually named, which I breed for wool to use for handspinning.  I did at one time have over 60, but am now down to 20, which is much more manageable!

Fiona's Champian Melanian Fleece

1993 Perth Royal Agricultural

Show

In 1993 one of my ewes, Mama by name.. won Champion Melanian Ewe at the Perth Royal Agricultural Show and one of my rams..Rambo... won Champion Melanian Ram . I was also fortunate to have a ewe called Fiona win the Champion Melanian Fleece overall that same year.

They are all coated throughout the year to protect their wool. We change the coats several times during the year as their wool grows.

My husband Mal at present is looking after all the sheep as my time is at present taken up mostly with the care of Andrea our little Grandaughter.  We mostly feed them grain and hay.  In the summer time there is not much feed for them in the paddocks, so we do all hand feeding.  Mal takes the hay and/or grain to them on our four wheel motor bike, sometimes with Andrea in a box on the front of the bike.

We do the shearing once a year in September before the heat really starts, and  this is a really special day for us.  Our shearer is now a friend of ours,  his wife and other of our friends who come to help, have a big lunch and gossip afterwards.

We help other friends too with their shearing at their farms, and these times too are lots of fun and very special.

In March each year we crutch the sheep, which is shearing round their backsides and down their back legs.  This is so they will not get 'blown' by the blowflies when the wet weather comes.

At present we have two rams in with selected ewes, and hopefully we will have some lambs again in May of this year.
