BLOUNTVILLE CEMETERY
On a hill west of Blountville stands the beautiful, historic cemetery, where hundreds of Blountville's grand and noble sleep. There you will find the graves of two famous Revolutionary War men, General George Rutledge and Congressman John Rhea. The epitaph on John Rhea's stone is as follows:
"Sacred to the Memory of John Rhea, who departed this life May 27, 1832, age 79 years. He was licensed to practice law in 1789. In the same year was a member of the Convention of N.C. that ratified the Constitution of the United States. Was a member of the N.C. Legislature the same year. Was a member of the General Assembly of Tennessee. Was a member of Congress from 1803 to 1815, 12 years--6 yeas of that time was chairman of the Committee of Post Office and Post Roads. Was again a member of Congress from1817 to 1828. All of which time he was chairman of the Committee of Pensions and Claims. Was one of the commissioners in 1816 that formed a treaty with the Choctaws. The dust shall return to the earth as it was and the Spirit shall return to the God who gave it."
This Historic Cemetery is located on Graveyard Hill in the county seat of Blountville. It was in use by 1800. This is the final resting place of the area's most illustrious citizens and numerous veterans of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War and the Civil War.
During the Civil War, Federal Troops fired on Blountville from this site.
