Foundations of Faith and Life in Jesus

Lesson 5 - Why Did Jesus Have to Die?

Questions: What is man like? What separated man from God? What did the Israelites do to take care of their sins (before Jesus)? What was necessary to forgive sins?

But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.
Isaiah 59:2 (p. 556)

For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life.
Leviticus 17:11 (p. 87)

But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.
Hebrews 9:7 (p. 892)

In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Hebrews 9:22 (p. 893)

But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Hebrews 10:3, 4 (p. 893)

Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
Hebrews 10:11 (p. 893)

Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.
Hebrews 7:27 (p. 892)

Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
Hebrews 9:25-28 (p. 893)

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
1 Peter 1:18, 19 (p. 900)

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.
1 Peter 2:24 (p. 901)

He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for [He is the one who turns aside God's wrath, taking away our sins, and not only ours but also] the sins of the whole world.
1 John 2:2 (p. 905)

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for [as the one who would turn aside his wrath, taking away] our sins.
1 John 4:10 (p. 907)

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 3:23 (p. 838)

God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, [as the one who would turn aside his wrath, taking away sin] through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished.
Romans 3:25 (p. 838)

He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
Romans 4:25 (p. 839)

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8 (p. 839)

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23 (p. 840)

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
Romans 10:13 (p. 843)

That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
Romans 10:9, 10 (p. 843)

Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.
Revelation 3:20 (p. 912)
