Foundations of Faith and Life in Jesus
Lesson 8 - Baptisms
Questions: What is baptism? Who should be baptized? What is the significance of baptism? What does the Holy Spirit do? What is the baptism with the Holy Spirit?
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 28:19 (p. 743)
Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his
death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as
Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If
we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in
his resurrection.
Romans 6:3-5 (p. 840)
Who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being
built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes
baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good
conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 3:20, 21 (p. 901)
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened,
and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.
Matthew 3:16 (p. 718)
And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the
water and Philip baptized him.
Acts 8:38 (p. 817)
At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and
all his family were baptized.
Acts 16:33 (p. 825)
Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.
Acts 22:16 (p. 830)
On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his
hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.
Acts 19:5,6 (p. 827)
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you
and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."
Acts 2:38, 39 (p. 811)
If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you
another Counselor to be with you forever-- the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him,
because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be
in you.
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all
things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
John 14:15-17, 26 (p. 803)
But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor
will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the
world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do
not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can
see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands
condemned.
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his
own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
John 16:7-11, 13 (p. 804)
John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the
thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and
with fire."
The Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven:
"You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
Luke 3:16, 22 (p. 764)
Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within
him. By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to
that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
John 7:38, 39 (p. 796)
And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit."
John 20:22 (p. 808)

clothed with power from on high.

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave
Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For
John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Acts 1:4, 5, 8 (p. 810)
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues
Acts 2:4 (p. 810)
No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my
Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out
my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy."
Acts 2:16-18 (p. 811)
