Overview of the Old Testament
Questions: What is the Old Testament? What does the Bible say about creation? Who are Abraham, Moses, and David? What is special about them? What happened in the Old Testament? Who does the Old Testament point to?
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1 (p. 1)
And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to
him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend.
James 2:23 (p. 898)
The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses
would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.
Exodus 33:11 (p. 67)
And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to
walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all
your soul, and to observe the LORD's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your
own good?
Deuteronomy 10:12,13 (p. 138)
But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom
you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the
Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the
LORD.
Joshua 24:15 (p. 175)
But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected
him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance,
but the LORD looks at the heart."
1 Samuel 16:7 (p. 210)
After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: `I have found
David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'
Acts 13:22 (p. 821)
And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with
wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and
understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if
you forsake him, he will reject you forever.
1 Chronicles 28:9 (p. 318)
Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him.
Job 13:15 (p. 381)
Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall
be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool."
Isaiah 1:18 (p. 510)
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good
news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the
captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.
Isaiah 61:1 (p. 558)
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm
you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me,
and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
I will be found by you," declares the LORD, "and will bring you back from captivity."
Jeremiah 29:11-14 (p. 589)
If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will
rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we
will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.
Daniel 3:17,18 (p. 662)
"But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them
give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with
compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish." When God saw what they did
and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not bring upon them the
destruction he had threatened.
Jonah 3:8-10 (p. 691)
He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act
justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8 (p. 695)
