Geographical taxonomy gets complicated here in New York. We have two kinds of municipalities into which all the land is divided, towns and cities. But there are two other geographical divisions that overlap those: hamlets, which are not municipalities, and villages, which are. And of course the Post Office chooses names that may or may not match the names of any of these. (A classic example was when a new Post Office was created not too far from here, and the residents couldn't agree on a name for it. The name that was submitted was "Discord," which somewhere along the line was changed to "Accord.")
So I live in the hamlet of Marlboro, in the Town of Marlborough, New York. I attend the First Presbyterian Church of Marlborough, but I get my mail at the Marlboro Post Office. At least I know for certain how to spell "Presbyterian"!
