The Rubber Rope

By Coy Jones

Creativity is a wonderful ally to the youngster whose childhood doesn’t have a lot of organized activities. Such was ours. And, since money was scarce also, we made do with some unusual items for amusement. The rubber rope was perhaps the most "off-the-wall" (literally, at times … more about that later) of our home grown toys.

Our Uncle J.W. imported donkeys from Mexico for Sears to sell in their catalogs and during one of his buying trips, he procured the rubber rope. It was wonderful, providing hours, and days, of fun, excitement, disappointment and trouble.

Simple enough, the rubber rope was about one-half inch in diameter but was constructed of small, stretchable rubber band type material. About 25 feet long in its’ relaxed position, it would stretch to probably 75 to 80 feet. The tension that could be created was substantial yet the strength, or weight, required to stretch the rope was minimal. It was a very flexible toy!
