Darlene's Crochet Stuff

I first learned to crochet when I was pretty young. My guess is I was about 7 or 8 years old. My Grammy Bea taught me to make a granny square, and I would sit and crochet for a few rows and then rip it out and start over, until the yarn was so worn, it was almost useless! Because all I knew how to make was a granny square, I made a giant one, with whatever yarn I could get my hands on. Which wasn't much.

Years went by and I didn't pick up a crochet hook again until I was engaged and wanted to make an afghan for our bed. This is when I got a book and taught myself to read the patterns and I made a granny square afghan. Quite an undertaking I might add. The squares didn't come out all the same size either. I used white, gray, and rose. Well, I was too far into it when I realized this, to start over, or rip out, so I kept going and luckily, when I joined them together, they looked fine. You would never know.

In my searches of the web for crochet tips, ideas and actual patterns, I've come across a lot of pages that I thought were great! I've included some links here. I was especially impressed by the number of people who make afghans for charity. So I'll include those that I have found too.
Here are just a few of my FO's (finished objects)

This is a picture of a mile-a-minute afghan from 'Annies Attic'. It is the first mile-a-minute afghan that I attempted. I found that I had to modify it a little bit to make it work, but I think it came out ok. I think that some of the holes are too big and I would modify it MORE if I attempted it again. The picture doesn't really do it justice, but you get the idea.

This is a blanket I made for a baby shower. I used a pattern from a book. Modified of course. I rarely follow a pattern as it is written. I ALWAYS change something. This one has a plain single crocheted border (different than the pattern), and It is a different width than the pattern called for. I just took the stitch I guess! Well, that seems to be the way it always goes with me. If I don't like something, I change it!

I loved this stitch when I first saw it. It came out of "Annies's Quick & Easy Crochet To Go!" magazine, Feb-March 1998-Number 109. I just started my subscription and this was in my first one! I swore I would do the pattern EXACTLY as it was in the magazine, then I didn't like the very end, so, yup, I ripped some out and changed it a bit.(what can I say, I guess it is just my nature)
