I remember the day well. I was a
senior in high school, and just going through the routine of a normal
school day. My cousin, her friend and I were gabbing while in study
hall. My cousin's friend said: My brother is coming home on his first
weekend pass from the military. Jokingly, I said: Well if he has
nothing to do send him up to my house, I wouldn't mind meeting him. I
didn't think anymore about it, and then the knock came on the door.
Unexpectingly, I opened it and the first thing I noticed was this
young man who had a great big beautiful smile that reached from ear
to ear. The next was, he had no hair! In a time when long hair was
the fashion. Hummm. Awkwardly, we introduced ourselves to each other
and I invited him in. After carrying on a somewhat casual
conversation and exchanging address's, he explained that he had to
go, because he was leaving in the morning to return to the base he
was stationed at. The rest of the day I was totally estatic,
overwhelmed by his manners, good humor, and of how much of a
gentleman he was. Another day went by and I thought about him, but
didn't think much would evolve from this chance meeting. Besides, who
was I fooling, a young man with all of those great qualities, he
couldn't be real. Well to make a long story short, twenty-five years
that is...A few more days went by and I thought about him again.
Apparently he was thinking about me also, as I recieved a card in the
mail on the same day that he received one from me saying: I enjoyed
meeting you very much and If you would like to go out on a date
sometime, let me know. Two years later we had a very simple,
inexpensive wedding. My uncle, the local J.P. married us. We then
headed for Ft. Riley Kansas on $13.00 and a dream. Two extremely
young and determined people who knew only that they were in
love...
