National Grandparent's Day Adopted Unanimously

Sarkis Assadourian M. P. for Don Valley North, successfully introduced M - 273, a motion respecting the creation of a National Grandparent's Day, to the House of Commons today.

Motion - 273 states; That in the opinion of this House, the goverment should consider designating the second Sunday in September of each year as "Grandparent's Day" in order to acknowledge their importance to the structure of the family in the nutruring, upbringing and education of children.

In introducing the motion to the House Mr. Assadourian commented:

"I am pleased to have had the support of my own party and that of the opposition parties in regards to this very important issue. It is important that this House recognizes the contributions of grandparents and the critical role that they play in the strengthening of the family."

" I am confident that this will give great satisfaction to all Seniors in my riding of Don Valley North especially those who worked diligently with me in the preparation of this bill."

Mr. Dennis Mills M. P. (Parlimentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry) commented in the House regarding the rare, successful, and unanimous adoption of the motion.

"It is appropriate to recognize the member from Don Valley North. It must bring a tremendous amount of satisfaction for this member to come to the House in his first term to present a bill that receives the support of all parties and eventually goes through the whole House. I congratulate my Colleague."

This motion flows from Bill C-274, a private member's bill I introducted on September 27, 1994, an act respecting a national grandparents day in Canada..................Grandparents have always been important to society. One step removed from the parenting process, they can share with their children the experience and wisdom they have gained. They provide a link to the treasures of family history and can provide an objective second opinion on a wide varity of important issues facing the family today."

Canadians "Grandparent's Day " Passed

OTTAWA- Reform M. P. Daphne Jennings (Mission-Coquitlam) rose in the House of Commons today in support for M - 273, and is pleased to announce that the second Sunday in September of each year is designated "Grandparent's Day"

Jennings who has been representing Canadian grandparents over the past couple of years, through her Bill C - 232 (now before the Justice Committee), has been actively working for a national grandparents day and is pleased to congratulate Mr. Assadourian on the success of his motion.

Jennings continued to state that "It is indeed fitting and proper that this 35th Parliament has finally corrected a wrong against our seniors - the oldest group in our society."

"What better way for children and parents to say thank you, than by having a nationally recognized day to visit grandparents and pay respect to these seniors," concluded Jennings.
