History:

Joseph Frey was born in Switzerland, April 26, 1843. He came to this country with his parents, brother and sisters in 1861. They located near St. Leon, Ind. where he engaged in shoe makeing. Later he followed the same trade at Richmond, Ind. and Cincinnati, from which he moved to Cedar Grove, Ind. In 1866 he married Maria Anna Hofmeyer and began housekeeping at Cedar Grove. In a few years he moved to a farm three miles east of Cedar Grove, where he lived for nearly fifty years. After the death of his first wife, he married Catherine Baudendistel. They lived in happiness and contentment for forty-three years. By industy and thrift he became a prosperous farmer and provided generously for all the needs of his family. To enter his home was to experience the cheery, helpful spirit of the members of the family toward each other.
