Spinach has been used in cooking since the 8th century. It was
brought to this country by the Spanish and has been mentioned
in American seed catalogs since the early 1800s. Spinach is now
available year round and can be found in two varieties: Savoy
has curly, crinkly leaves and the New Zealand has flat, smooth
leaves. Fresh spinach may be stored in a plastic bag in the
refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Spinach is a rich source of iron, and vitamins A and C.
Americans consume approximately 40 pounds of apples or apple
products a year, making it one of the country's most popular fruits. They're a good source of fiber as well as vitamins A
and C.
Cheddar ranks as one of America's most popular cheeses.Derived
from cow's milk, this dairy product originated in the village of
Cheddar in England's west county of Somerset. The color of
cheddar ranges from white, its natural color, to bright orange.
A natural coloring agent called Annatto gives orange cheddar its
appearance without changing its taste. The consistency and taste
of cheddar is dependent on its age. Younger varieties are mild and slice easily, while aged cheddar develops a sharper flavor
and more crumbly texture.
Garlic is a popular ingredient worldwide. Look for firm heads
of garlic with tightly closed bulbs. Do not store garlic in the refrigerator; instead, store it in an open container in a dark,
cool place. You can keep garlic heads up to two months.
Separated, unpeeled cloves will keep for up to two weeks. The
flavor of garlic changes, depending on the cooking procedure.
Raw garlic is extremely sharp; while long, slow cooking mellows
its flavor.
Barbecue sauce is a passionate subject for many people. Individuals from many areas of the country proudly claim that their region's style of barbecue is best. This popular concoction
is traditionally made with tomatoes,sugar, onion, garlic and
other spices. However, mustard, vinegar, hot peppers and beer
