"A Trusting Heart"

The following are pointers that Major Rowe gave to us on his last Sunday before heading off to International Training College in England:

» Make a decision to trust the Lord. Remember only He can save, & satisfy.

» Make a total surrender. Renouce yourself & put God first.

» Be devoted. Seek the pleasure of Christ daily.

» Know your sense of direction!

Good News

Michelle Hatfield passed her Nursing exams & has accepted a position in Texas. This past week proud Mom, Bev, travelled to the U.S. with her to help her get settled. Congratulations!

Congratulations to Greg Leach who received his Jr. Soldier Graduation Certificate.

10 year old Matthew Harding underwent brain surgery last November at Sick Children's Hospital in T.O. Drs. succesfully removed some brain tissue which was causing serious seizures & the necessity to take heavy medication. Grandparents Roy & Jean Harding feel the surgeons knife was guided by God's hand because of faithful prayers of many of our Corps Family. Thanks for you prayers.

Matthew lives in Bowmanville with parents Russ & Kim, sister Jennifer and brother Andrew. We were pleased to see Matthew at our Christmas Eve service & at a Sunday meeting in early January, just weeks after his surgery.

A Musical Commentary:
Feb. 14th Guest Leader, Capt. Kevin Metcalf

God says that his people should make music together in fellowship & in worship. There is an assumption in scripture that this will be done regularly & that it will be done well. As with many of life's pursuits.

In order to do music well, some effort is required. This is called "practicing" - a personal discipline which has lost its appeal for far too many "musicians".

The number of competent pianists in the Army is declining (not in Peterborough!) in some part due to the popularity of taped music. And while the number of people involved in church bands and orchestras in North Americahas grown exponentially over the past 20 years, the opposite is happening in the Army.

There is a potential tragedy here and it remains for the faithful few to show some real effort as a motivational example to the next generation.

Not every musician will achieve great accomplishments, but every musician can practice. Get at it!!

Kevin's Pick (CD recommendation):
"Masterpiece" by Doug Chalk. Contemporary Christian Songs. (Instrumental)
Available at Salvation Army Supplies & Purchasing or through Capt. Metcalf. We have his E-mail address.

Great Work!

Message From Great Britain

As many of you will know I am in London, England for nine weeks at the Army's International College for Officers. I fear however that nine weeks may not be enough time for me to complete my mission here.

The Brits are a stranger lot than I had originally thought. For example, it will take at least a month to teach them how to drive properly. When I took the automobile for my first drive I found that someone had moved the steering wheel and all the gears to the other side. If that wasn't bad enough, when I finally got moving everyone was driving towards me, when I motioned for them to get back on the proper side of the road, they honked their funny foreign horns at me. One red, two storey jobby got rather rude and since he was so much bigger than me, I've decided to drive on the wrong side too, for now.

Then I hit my first "round-a-bout." Well, you know it's definately put together wrong when the inside track doesn't even have an exit. Fortunately, you can keep going round in that lane all day if you wish, matter of fact, I had to even if I didn't wish, fortunately I had plenty of petro, that's what they call gas over here. I told you they're strange. Actually at least that makes sense, I've never heard an Englishman say he had "petro" after eating his dinner.

Now that you mention dinner, eating is another area in which these poor chaps are rather confused! Someone asked, "what will you have for Tea?" Dah! Earl Grey, hot just like Capt. Picard" I said. They looked at me as if Capt. Picard was their Corps Officer or something. Oh yes, they had Earl Grey, thank God, but by "tea" they meant the evening meal. Can you say "supper?" Then someone said "what would like for pudding?" "How absurd", I thought, I'll have pudding for pudding." But no, you see, pudding is actually dessert over here. So I had pie for pudding and everyone was happy. In fact, they eat so often over here I'm not sure when they get time for anything else.

After dinner (that's noon by the way - stay with the program here), I recalled that a famous pussy cat went to London to see the Queen. I thought that would be a nice way to spend the afternoon. So off I went. It appears the Queen was not receiving guests that day. You know those toy soldiers with fuzzy hats and wooden guns? Turns out they are not just toys after all, they really can see, and run and shoot too. In Canada they send you to jail and let you out on bail real soon for lesser crimes but over here its "off with your head" for every little thing. It really is a terrible habit. Can you say "Charles the 1st?" I got a little scared whe I saw the tower. Fortunately they've not done that for quite some time now. Whew! Did you ever wonder what the world looks like when your head is rolling? Hey, who turned out the lights?

Actually, my first two weeks have not bee quite that eventful, but it has been great. I've not only been enjoying London and the great English hospitality, but it has also ben great getting to know my fellow officers from sixteen different countries. We have delegates from Canada, USA, Great Britain, Norway, Nigeria, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe, India, Pakistan, Bolivia, Philipines, Netherlands, Sweden. We are all becoming very good friends and making memories that will last a life time. It is amazing how the love of God and the unique fellowship of the Army crosses cultural barriers and how God breaks down all dividing walls between those who love and serve him. This is a great experience!

Thank you for your prayers. May you be as happy in whatever God has called you to do as I have been and continue to be in his service.

God Bless!

Major Rowe

A High-Tech Prayer

As i boot up my PC,
my modem dialling next to me,
I ask you lord, Lord, give me a sign -
will i ever get on-line?
If you'd kindly let me through,
I'll byte no more than I can chew.
I'll surf the waves amid the Net,
with my mouse, my loyal pet,
And through each window I will see
the websites that are offered me.
Resisting any chat room's lure,
I'll download only what is pure.
If system errors don't prevail,
I vow to read all my e-mail.
If you save me from a crash,
I'll dump my games into the trash.
Just please don't take my CD-ROM!
Thank You, Lord, God Bless.com
