John DeLong, 67 years old, fell down a flight of stairs last night in the hotel of Nicholas LaForce, No. 1163 Clinton avenue north. The man's neck was broken and he lived only a short time after the accident. Coroner Killip investigated the case and will give a certificate of accidental death.

DeLong was a boarder at the hotel. The ambulance of the Homeopathic Hospital and a physician living near by were summoned.

John DeLong, my 2nd great-grandfather, was born April 21, 1848, in France. He became a United States citizen on October 15, 1892, and was listed as a subject of Belgium. His wife was Louise Ferrage - later Louise DeNero, (I may have her maiden name misspelled - I am relying on a transcribed signature on her daughter Wilhelmina's baptismal certificate).  John and Louise's children at the time of their immigration to America were Mary DeLong and Louis DeLong (born June 22, 1878, died February 11, 1963 in San Gabriel, California), both born in Belgium; they became U. S. citizens upon their father's citizenship. John and Louise had two more children, both born in the United States: Jeanette DeLong (died November 26, 1971, married Thomas Davis) and Wilhelmina Margaret DeLong (born May 27, 1882, died June 13, 1970), married Erving Edwin Bender). John DeLong's death certificate lists his age at death as 67 years, 9 months, and 14 days; his occupation as gardener. The death certificate lists the cause of death as: fracture of skull, with contributory causes as: a) Cerebral hemorrhage, b) Accident. Fell down stairs. My grandmother, Marjorie (Bender) Smith told me that John DeLong (her grandfather) lived at her parent's house in Rochester, NY from 1905 until shortly before his death; apparently by that time he was divorced from Louise. My grandmother thought that John "might have been a peddler - he was always on the road."
