My favorite scriptural passage is Isaiah 40:31. Once, in 1986, while driving through the Mojave Desert, I felt inspired to write a poem about what it means to me to be lifted on the wings of an eagle.

Wings of Eagles

RECENTLY I FOUND MYSELF WONDERING
ABOUT GOD'S HOLY WORD
AND THINKING WHAT IT REALLY MEANS
TO HAVE JESUS AS MY LORD.

FOR I WAS LIFTED ON WINGS AS AN EAGLE
AND I SAW GOD'S HOLY FACE
AND SALVATION WAS GIVEN FREELY
AS I WAS SAVED BY HIS MERCY AND GRACE.

AND NOW I’VE READ THE STORIES OF HEAVEN
OF CRYSTAL CITIES AND SILVER SEAS
AND KNOW THAT SOMEDAY I WILL LIVE THERE
IN A MANSION HE HAS PREPARED FOR ME.

AND I SHALL BE LIFTED ON WINGS, LIKE AN EAGLE
BY HIS NAIL SCARRED HANDS BORNE ABOVE
TO DWELL WITH THE ANGELS FOREVER
AND THROUGHOUT ETERNITY I’LL SING OF HIS LOVE.

YES, I KNOW ALL THE BIBLE STORIES
AND THE MIRACLES OF OLD THAT THEY TELL
HOW DANIEL LIVED, THOUGH IN A LION'S DEN
AND JONAH IN THE BELLY OF A WHALE.

AND I KNOW OF ELIJAH AND MOSES
OF THE PATHS THAT THE PROPHETS WALKED
HOW THE FIRE CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN
AND A BURNING BUSH THAT TALKED.

OF THE PLAGUES THAT FELL ON EGYPT
HOW GOD'S PEOPLE CROSSED THE RED SEA
AND THEY COMPLAINED THOUGH HE FED THEM MANNA
LORD THEY SOUND SO MUCH LIKE ME.

I THRILL TO STORIES OF THE DISCIPLES
PETER WALKING ON THE WATERS OF GALILEE
THE FIRST MIRACLE BY JESUS AT CANA
AND THE TEARS HE SHED AT GETHSEMANE.

THOUGH EARTHLY TEMPTATIONS OFT BESET ME
AND SINS OF THIS WORLD BECKON ME
LORD I KNOW WHEN I KNEEL AT YOUR ALTAR
WITH WINGS OF AN EAGLE, MY SOUL SHALL SOAR FREE.

LORD EVEN THOUGH I'M FAR FROM PERFECT
AND THE SHACKLES OF THE WORLD CLING TO ME
BUT, JUST LIKE PETER, I TOO CAN WALK ON WATER
FOR BY YOUR GRACE I HAVE BEEN SET FREE.

LORD LIFT ME UP ON WINGS LIKE AN EAGLE
LIFT ME UP LORD , 'TIL I SEE YOUR FACE
AND GOODNESS AND MERCY SURELY WILL FOLLOW
FOR I'M JUST A CHILD SAVED BY YOUR GRACE.

A POEM BY HASKELL J. PEAKER
