  1. Mrs. Victoria Elizabeth [Jollett] Breeden, 66, wife of Decater B. Breeden died suddenly at her home in Washington, D. C. early Tuesday morning, May 2. Mrs. Breeden had been a sufferer from asthma for years, but been in her usual health until a few hours before her death.

    Mrs. Breeden was the youngest daughter of the late James Franklin and Lucy Shifflett Jollette, and was born at Nortonsville, Greene County on March 19,1878.

    She was married to D. B. Breeden on Dec. 24, 1901 and spent most of her married life in Shenandoah. Her husband is a former N. W. [Norfolk & Western Railroad] engineer. They moved from Shenandoah to Waynesboro, VA, and from there to Washington, D.C. where he is employed in government work. She is survived by her husband and the following sisters: Mrs. A. J. (Emma) Coleman, Shenandoah; Mrs. W. B. (Mary) Davis, Harrisonburg, Mrs. Geo. F. (Sallie) Clift, Washington, D. C. and Mrs. W. J. (Laura) Sullivan of Shenandoah.

    One daughter died in infancy. The following members of the family are deceased: Mrs. James (Leanna) Knight, of Albemarle County, B. L. Jollette of Stanardsville, William Isaac Jollette of Greene County, U. F. Jollette of Baltimore, Md. And one half brother Henry Jollette, of Harriston, VA.

    Mrs. Breeden was a devout member of the U. B. Church and possessed an amiable disposition which had endeared her to the hearts of many. The news of her death was received in Shenandoah with genuine regret and sorrow.

    The funeral will be held from the U. B. Church this afternoon at 3 p.m. with the Rev. P. W. Fischer in charge. Burial will be in the U. B. Cemetery.

  2. Rev. John W. Jollett, a venerable local Methodist preacher, died at his home at Jolletts, this county [Page], Wednesday night, aged eighty-five years. Mr. Jollett had been in excellent health until a year or two ago when heart disease began to trouble him a great deal. He was conscious till the last and spoke comforting words to the loved ones around him. His aged wife has also been in a serious condition for some time.

    Mr. Jollett was well known and much loved by the people in the upper end of the county and East Rockingham among whom he had ministered spiritually for a great many years. He was a preacher of earnestness and force and ready to go where he needed without thought of reward. His disposition was kindly and he had brotherly love for all mankind. He was thrifty in his habits and besides his little farm at Jolletts owned four dwellings in Shenandoah where he resided until a few years ago. At one time he was a corporation school trustee. Three children survive him. Mrs. T. W. Meadows of Jollett, John B. Jollett of Sparrows Point, Md, and Charles Jollett of Portsmouth, VA, all of whom are expected to be at the funeral. The remains will be buried in the graveyard near the late home of the deceased. At this hour the time for the funeral has not been set.

  3. Rosetta M. [Meadows] Eppard, 94, died May 17, at the home of Gloria Dean in Elkton, where she had been living.

    She was born June 3, 1883 in Page County and was the daughter of the late Thomas and Matilda Jollett Meadows.

    She was married to T. W. Eppard, who died Oct. 25, 1961. Surviving are a daughter, Ethel Purdham of Shenandoah; two sisters, Mattie and Maggie Smith, both of Shenandoah; 10 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.

    Burial was in Jollett Cemetery near Elkton.

  4. James Franklin Jollett of Harriston, Augusta County, a brother of the late Rev. John W. Jollett, of Jollett, this county [Page], and the father of Mrs. A. J. [Emma] Coleman, Mrs. W. J. [Laura] Sullivan, Mrs. D. B.[Victoria] Breeden, Mrs. Sallie Clift, and Mrs. W. B.[Mary] Davis, of Shenandoah, this county [Page], passed away at his home at 2 a.m., on Tuesday in his 94th year. He had been in declining health for some time on account of the infirmities of age, but was confined to his bed for only a few days before the end, which came peacefully.

    In previous years the News and Courier has reported a number of family gatherings held to celebrate successive birthdays of this remarkable old gentleman, who retained his faculties and his capacity to enjoy life far past the allotted time of man. He was ninety-three years old last November. Mr. Jollett was a man of marked Christian character, who drew constant joy and inspiration from his religion, and was a devout and useful member of the Brethren church during his long, useful life. He was born in Greene county and during his earlier manhood moved to Augusta, where he operated his little farm near Harriston for many years, enjoying peace and contentment and the highest regard of his neighbors. His first wife[Lucy Ann Shiflett Jollett] was from Greene county, the second wife [Eliza Coleman], now his widow, from Augusta. All of his children are from the first union. To the list of those at Shenandoah are to be added B. L. Jollett, of Greene County, U. S. Jollett, of Baltimore, and Mrs. Leanna Knight of Nortonsville, VA. There was a general exodus of all the Shenandoah relationship to attend the funeral which was held from the Brethren church at Harriston and was attended by all of the children.

  5. Mrs. Emma Jollette Coleman, age 82, died at her late home on Tuesday morning, April 10th, at 6:20 a.m., after an illness of approximately 25 years. Although an invalid for years, her condition was not considered critical until Sunday morning when she was stricken with a heart attack.

    Mrs. Coleman had lived in Shenandoah for the past 51 years and had endeared herself to all who knew her.

    She was a devout member of the Newport Brethren Church and exemplified the true Christian spirit in her daily life.

    She was the daughter of the late James Franklin and Lucy Shifflett Jollette and was born in Greene County on Feb. 1, 1863. Sixty-four years ago she was married to Andrew Jackson Coleman. They spent the early part of their married life in Albemarle County and from there they located at Mill Creek in Rockingham County, finally coming to Shenandoah where he was employed as a stationary engineer for the N & W Railway Co.

    Mrs. Coleman is survived by her aged husband and the following children: Mrs. N. W. (Mattie) Escue, of Shenandoah, John T. Coleman, of Shenandoah, Mrs. A. L. (Minnie) Maiden, of Arlington, Mrs. J. M. (Reba) Morris, of Norfolk, and Russell W. Coleman, of Washington, D. C. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. W. J. (Laura) Sullivan, and Mrs. W. B. (Mollie) Davis, of Harrisonburg. Deceased brothers and sisters are: B. L. Jollette, of Stanardsville, W. Isaac Jollette, of Greene County, U. S. Jollette of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. J. M. (Leanna) Knight of Stanardsville, Va., Mrs. D. B. (Victoria) Breeden of Washington, D. C., and Mrs. Sallie C. Clift, of Shenandoah and Washington, D. C. Three sisters have passed away in the past year, Mrs. Breeden in May, 1944, Mrs. Clift in July, 1944. She is also survived by six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

    The funeral will be conducted from her late home this afternoon at 2:30 with the Rev. C. E. Long, of Mt. Meridian officiating, assisted by Elder B. L. Cave and Rev. P. W. Fisher. Burial will be in the U. B. Cemetery.

  6. Mrs. Mattie C. [Coleman] Escue, 95, a well-known Page County school teacher, died Friday morning, Feb. 10 at her home at 411 Fourth Street, Shenandoah.

    She was born March 12, 1882 in Greene County and was a daughter of the late Jack and Emma Jollet Coleman.

    On Dec. 22, 1924, she married Harry Escue, who died Jan. 8, 1940.

    Mrs. Escue taught school 55 years before retiring from the Page County school system and was a member of the Milnes Chapter 3 of the Eastern Star at Shenandoah.

    Surviving are two sisters, Reba Morris of Shenandoah and Mrs. [Minnie] Arthur Maiden of Arlington, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. W. H. Bricker of Shenandoah.

    The funeral was conducted Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Brill Funeral Home in Elkton by the Rev. Trueman R. Tremble and the Rev. Hudson P. Nuckols. Burial was in the Evangelical United Brethren Cemetery in Shenandoah.

  7. Mrs. Laura B. [Jollett] Sullivan, 82, died at her home Wednesday evening about 10 o'clock after an illness of eight months.

    She was born on May 30, 1865, a daughter of the late Franklin and Lucy Jollett, of Greene County. She was united in marriage with William J. Sullivan, who preceded her in death several years ago. She was a charter member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church which was organized in 1895, and was an active member of various organizations in the church until her health failed.

    Her kindness and love won for her a place in the community and church that will always be remembered.

    She is survived by the following daughters: Mrs. J. W. (Minnie) Breeden, Roanoke; Mrs. C. V. (Pearl) Strole, Shenandoah; Mrs. C. H. (Floral) Merica, Shenandoah; Mrs. L. G. (Elta) Farrar, Portsmouth, VA; Mrs. F. S. (Leota) Racey, Dayton, VA; one sister Mrs. Mollie Davis, Harrisonburg, VA; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. Four brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Evangelical United Brethren Church with her pastor, the Rev. P. W. Fisher, in charge assisted by the Rev. L. A. Racey and Elder B. L. Cave. Burial took place in the United Brethren Cemetery.

    Pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, Millard M. Davis, Russell Coleman, Owen Sullivan, Leonard Clift, Clyde Knight, and Alfred Roberts. The ladies of the church carried flowers.

  8. Mrs. Mary Frances [Jollett] Davis, widow of Walter Beriah Davis and a resident of Harrisonburg for the past 13 years, died Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 22, at three o'clock at the home of her daughter Mrs. Violetta Ryan, 473 South Mason Street.

    Mrs. Davis suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on October 6 and was for three weeks a patient at the Rockingham Memorial Hospital. She returned to her residence on October 27 and seemed to be improving until three weeks ago when her condition became critical.

    A daughter of the late James F. and Lucy Ann [Shiflett] Jollett, she was born in Greene County, where she spent the early part of her life and attended public school.

    Following her marriage on February 11, 1890 to Walter Beriah Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Davis resided in Shenandoah for forty years. For the past 13 years Mrs. Davis had been making her home with her daughter in Harrisonburg.

    Mrs. Davis was a quiet unassuming person with many fine qualities. Her cheerful disposition and lovable nature endeared her to all with whom she came in contact.

    Mrs. Davis united with the church in early life and was a faithful member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church at Shenandoah where she had taken an active part in its various organizations.

    The last surviving member of a family of nine children, Mrs. Davis is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Velma [Davis] Woodring, Martinsburg, WV, and Mrs. Violetta [Davis] Ryan, Harrisonburg; two sons, Millard Davis of Shenandoah, and Orvin O. Davis, Portsmouth; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her husband, a well known contractor, preceded her in death on October 31, 1934.

    Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at two o'clock from the Shenandoah Evangelical United Brethren Church, with her pastor, the Rev. P. W. Fisher, in charge assisted by Dr. B. B. Milshall, Raymond B. Clift, Leonard C. Clift, Russell Coleman, Lionel Morris, and Gilbert A. Steppe.

    Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Steppe of Dahlgren spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Steppe.

    Dr. and Mrs. A. L. Maiden of Arlington attended the funeral of her aunt, Mrs. Davis, on Friday and visited her sister, Mrs. Mattie Escue.

    Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Farrar and daughter Phyllis of Portsmouth attended the funeral of Mrs. Mary F. Davis on Friday and spent the weekend with Mrs. Farrar's sister, Mrs. Clyde Strole, and J. W. Breeden of Harrisonburg.

    Mrs. Sadie Jollett of Dahlgren is spending several weeks with Mrs. Mattie Escue.

  9. Funeral services were held Sunday from the St. Peter's Lutheran Church for Millard M. Davis, 57, Norfolk & Western [Railway] storekeeper, who died at his home last Thursday morning.

    The Rev. H. Edmund Pfeifer, pastor of the church, was in charge of the services and burial was in the E. U. B. Cemetery.

    The large crowd of sorrowing friends and the beautiful floral designs were a tribute to the high esteem in which the deceased was held by his hundreds of friends. The funeral services were attended by one of the largest throngs ever present for final rites in the community with friends from Washington, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Roanoke attending.

    Active pallbearers were: Amos Kite, Elwood Kite, Russell Coleman, Clyde Knight, Lewis Jollette, and Ben Davis.

    Honorary pallbearers were: Clyde Hisey, J. L. Foltz, Clyde Koontz, Floyd Eppard, Owen M. Strickler, J. D. Hodges, V. C. Griffith, B. W. Strum, J. R. Painter, W. H. Bricker, C. C. Morrison, Jennings Meadows, J. T. Rothgeb, H. G. Burks, H. C. Bradley, W. W. Barnes, W. O Smith, Jr., Lewis Powell, Harry C. L. Pamplin, C. C. Lankford, H. L. Kiblinger, C. L. Graviet, W. T. Turner, W. T. Sink, B . H. Keith, J. B. Reynolds, John Foltz, and Pete Davis.

  10. Orvin O. Davis, 64, of Portsmouth, died early Wednesday morning, October 16th at his home. He had been in ill health for several years.

    He was born in Shenandoah, the son of the late Walter and Mollie Jollett Davis.

    Mr. Davis has resided in Portsmouth for a number of years where he was employed in the Navy Yard.

    He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucille Rucker Davis, a son, Orvin O. Davis, Jr., of Shenandoah, a daughter, Mrs. Fred (Mary Eleanor) Slade, of Portsmouth, and four grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Violetta Ryan of Harrisonburg and Mrs. Velma Woodring of Korea.

    A funeral service was held in Portsmouth at 11:00 a.m. today, after which the body was brought to the Warren G. Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah. The family will receive relatives and friends between 7:30 and 9:00 p.m. tonight (Thursday).

    A brief funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday with Dr. Arthur L. Maiden officiating. Burial will be in Shenandoah.

  11. Mrs. Velma Davis Woodring, widow of Arthur H. Woodring, died Friday, June 5 at the home of her sister, Mrs. Violetta Davis Ryan of 473 South Mason Street, Harrisonburg. She was a teacher at the Waterman School in Harrisonburg the past three years. She had been ill for the past five weeks.

    She was the daughter of the late Walter B. and Mary Jollette Davis and was born in Shenandoah. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. She was a graduate of the Shenandoah High School and attended Madison College. She received her BS from Shepherdstown, WV.

    Before moving to Harrisonburg three years ago, Mrs. Woodring had taught School in Page County and Martinsburg, WV. She also taught at the American Dependents School in Tokyo, Japan, a year and was principal of American Dependents School in Pusan and Seoul, Korea for six years.

    She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Violetta Davis Ryan of Harrisonburg.

    Funeral services were conducted Sunday at the Lindsey Funeral Home with Dr. Forrest S. Racey and Dr. Arthur L. Maiden officiating. Burial took place in the EUB Cemetery in Shenandoah.

    Pallbearers were James F. Logan Jr., James O'Donnell, Joseph R. Hiner, E. S. Ashby, H. O. Anderson, Joseph Viler, Harry Keister, and B. B. Lutz.

  12. Mrs. Sallie Catherine[Jollett] Clift, age 73 years, widow of the late George T. Clift, died at Garfield Hospital, Washington, D. C. on Friday, July 7, 1944 after several years of illness. Mrs. Clift had been a patient in the hospital three weeks prior to her death. A heart condition following several parlytic strokes ending in pneumonia, caused her death.

    Mrs. Clift was born in Greene County on May 10, 1871 and spent her younger life there. She was the daughter of the late James Franklin Jollette and Lucy Ann Shifflett Jollette. After her marriage to Mr. Clift she moved to Shenandoah. During the later years she spent a good part of her time with her children in Washington. She was a member of the Shenandoah U. B. Church and her body was brought there early Monday morning where it lay in state until 2:00 in the afternoon when her funeral was conducted by Elder B. L. Cave assisted by the Rev. P. W. Fischer.

    Mrs. Clift is survived by her three children: Leonard K. Clift, Raymond B. Clift, and Mrs. (Alda) Wilson Suite; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren and three sisters: Mrs. A. J. (Emma) Coleman, Mrs. W. B. (Mollie) Davis, and Mrs. W. J. (Laura) Sullivan. Two sisters and three brothers are deceased: Mrs. Victoria Breeden of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Mitchel (Leanna) Knight of Greene County, U. F. Jollette of Baltimore, B. L. Jollette and Isaac Jollette, of Green County.

    Burial was in the U. B. Cemetery.

  13. The remains of Ulysses Jollette of Baltimore, who died in that city Friday morning arrived at Shenandoah Saturday evening at the home of his brother-in-law D. B. Breeden.

    The funeral was held at the U. B. Church at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Verbena Lodge, 42 I. O. O. F. attending in a body. Rev. Lee B. Sheaffer officiating. Interment was in the U. B. cemetery. He is survived by his wife and one daughter Mrs. G. A. [Vessie] Steppe, and five sisters: Mrs. A. J.[Emma] Coleman, Mrs. W. B.[Mary] Davis, Mrs. D. B.[Victoria] Breeden, Mrs. W. J. [Laura] Sullivan, Mrs. Sallie Clift. All residing in Shenandoah. He was 48 years old. The funeral was attended by a large number of relatives and friends.

    We wish to thank the many kind friends, also the Odd Fellows for the many acts of kindness shown us during our sad hours of bereavement.-Mrs. U. F. Jollett, Mrs. Gilbert Steppe, and Mrs. D. B. Breeden.

  14. Sell V. Shifflet, a former deputy sheriff, and in more recent years custodian of the court house, died early Sunday morning of a self inflicted bullet wound. Mr. Shifflett had not enjoyed good health in recent months and had recently undergone surgery at a local hospital. A son of the late Thomas Shifflett and Lucretia Jollett, he was born Oct. 19, 1871 at East Point and spent practically all his life in Rockingham Co. and Harrisonburg. In early years he devoted his time to farming and later served as deputy sheriff under the late Sheriff Fowley and also served as superintendent of the county farm for a number of years. He was a member of the E.U.B. Church.

    His wife, the former Miss Margaret Johnson, died Dec. 27, 1901 [obvious error - they were married in 1901. She died in 1954.]. He is survived by one son, Roy T. Shifflett of Lansdale, PA and three grandchildren. He also leaves several step children and seven great grand children.

    Funeral sevices will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Chapel of the Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Douglas Eckert. Burial will be in McGaheysville Cemetery.

  15. Ethyl Sullivan, 80, of Barboursville, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Culpeper Medical Center. She was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Albemarle County, a daughter of the late John L. Sullivan, Sr. and Fleta Jollett Sullivan. She is survived by two cousins, Elwood Hall and Lorena Garver, two nephews, Charles E. Turner and James L. Turner, and three nieces, Gladys M. Haney, Margie T. Sacra and Lucille Milici. A number of great-nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by a brother, John Lloyd Sullivan, Jr. and a sister Bessie S. Turner. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Ryan Funeral Chapel in Quinque, with Pastor Wendell Lamb officiating. Interment will be at the later date at the Mission Home Cemetery.
