CAGE
Before you bring your budgie home, be sure to have a cage, food and all necessary
accessories ready.
If possible, choose a rectangular cage with horizontal bars (budgies love to climb!). The
cage should measure a minimum of 12" long by 12" high and 14" wide. But the larger the cage
the better for your budgie. So, purchase as large cage as you can afford. Look for the
spacing between the bars - it should not be wider than 1.2".
A good cage has a plastic sliding tray on the bottom for easy cleaning. You can use black
and white newspaper, pine shavings or corn cob on the bottom of the cage.
You should have at least 2-3 perches. Look for different shapes and
sizes - it helps to exercise the bird's legs. You can even bring some natural tree branches
from outside, but make sure to wash and dry them before putting them into the cage.
Accessories you'll need:
Several food dishes
Water cups or fountains
Cuttlebone or mineral block
Toys and ladders
Where to put the cage?
The first place where you should not put your bird cage is your kitchen. Any kind of
cooking fumes can be poisonous for your budgies. Put the cage in the living room or
somewhere your family spends a lot of time. The place should be light, but not in a direct
sunlight.
