Budgies are probably the most popular pet birds in the world. The budgerigar (or parakeet) is
a small member of the parrot family from Australia and its color in nature is green. When
people started to keep them as pets in the 19-th century, they also started to develop other
colors like blue, gray, violet, yellow (lutino) and white (albino). Two last ones are considered
as rare. Actually budgie color varieties are endless.
You'll be able to tell your bird's sex when it's about 5-6 months old. Females develop brown
cere (the area where the nostrils are located), male budgies have blue cere.
Budgies come in two sizes: English budgies (10 inches long) and American budgies (7 inches
long). English ones are bigger, more majestic and less active, they are more like show birds. But
most budgie owners have American ones. They are active, curious birds who can make as great pets as
any other small animals. And because theyre not too loud, you can even keep them if you live in
an apartment.
