Northfield Baptist Church was first organized in 1786. It was the first church in what became the Township of Livingston, New Jersey, in 1813. Through the years, God has graciously preserved Northfield so that it remains a small lighthouse in a sin-darkened world.
Our creed centers on Jesus Christ as revealed to us in the Bible, which is the inerrant, infallible, and inspired Word of God down to the last jot and tittle. We sing the great hymns of the faith in our Sunday worship meetings--songs that make much of Christ, of His atoning blood, and of His glorious love as the Lord of all and the Saviour of sinners. Our minister subscribes to and preaches the historic Baptist distinctives, the Five Pillars of the Reformation, and the Doctrines of Grace, not out of mere sentimental affection for old-fashioned doctrine, but because he is convinced that they are Biblical truth.

THE GOOD NEWS OF HOPE FOR A WORLD RUINED BY SIN
“Nothing But the Blood of Jesus”

The only hope of mankind is a Person, the crucified and risen Lord Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 1:1), God's eternal Son. Through the merit of His own perfect obedience to the Law of God and His own atoning blood--shed for upon the cross nearly 2000 years ago and accepted by God as a propitiation for sin (a satisfactory payment for its eternal penalty)--Jesus freely offers a perfect righteousness "without works" to every sinner who will believe God's Word (the Bible) and turn from their sins to trust in Him alone as Saviour.

No other hope, no other plea,
He took my place and died for me;
O precious Lamb of Calvary,
HE took MY PLACE, and died FOR ME.

Very simply put, our purpose is to be used for the glory of God. We intend to do this by living in light of, and proclaiming, the only message of hope for this world which is so marred and ruined by man's sin. That message declares that unworthy sinners, even such as ourselves, can be saved and transformed into the children of God by His grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Saviour. We are not worthy to be His children, but in His amazing grace and love He has made us such through the blood of His dear Son and the power of the Holy Spirit. Salvation is not found in any of the so-called “great religions” of the world, but in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ which begins when you are born again and rest upon Him “through faith in His blood” (Romans 3:25) for salvation from your sins and the wrath of God which you deserve because of your sins (John 1:12-13; 3:3, 18).
Our desire is that God will lead you to come to know Him through trusting the Lord Jesus Christ, even as, in His great and infinite mercy, He has led us to know Him. “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). “For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day” (II Timothy 1:12).

We are an INDEPENDENT BAPTIST CHURCH.

We are emphatically NOT connected with the American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A., nor with the National Council of Churches or the World Council of Churches. God has led us to separate from these apostate organizations because they reject the sovereign authority of His Word, the Bible, and thus deny the only hope of mankind, which is revealed in the Bible alone. As such, we call on every Bible believer who remains within these (and any other) false religious systems to go forth with us unto the One Who is our Hope, outside the camp of religious apostasy, gladly bearing the reproach of His cross until He comes again (Hebrews 12:12-14; Revelation 18:4; Amos 3:3; 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1).

Our Library
NEW! (APRIL 14, 2000): “The Best Friend of All” by Joseph Tirrito. Did you know that the Bible has much to say about friendship? What is a friend? Is there such a thing as “a friend that sticketh closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24)? Certainly, yes! “I want you to meet a Friend of mine today—my best Friend, indeed, the best Friend of all.”

The Blood of the Cross by Horatius Bonar. (NOTE: This link will take you off of our website to the website of Chapel Library, a ministry of Mount Zion Bible Church, Pensacola, Florida.) Can you remain unchanged as you learn of the claim which Jesus Christ and His blood have on your soul, for either your full and free pardon or your damnation? “The precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot” (I Peter 1:19).

NEW! (MARCH 4, 2000): “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards. Sermon preached from Deuteronomy 32:35 at Enfield, Connecticut, on July 8, 1741—the most famous sermon ever preached by an American. Religion and good works cannot save you, for, as Jesus said to one religious teacher, “Ye must be born again.” You must have a personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and His blood if you are to escape hell. Hell IS real, and you had better turn to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Saviour of hell-deserving sinners, before it is too late. As Mr. Edwards asks, “How can you rest one moment in such a condition?”

NEW! (FEBRUARY 23, 2000): “Saint Patrick Was a Baptist” by Dr. John Summerfield Wimbish. Sermon preached at Calvary Baptist Church, New York City, on Sunday, March 12, 1952. You will be surprised to learn that Patrick was not a Roman Catholic bishop who converted the Irish people to the religion of the Pope, but a gospel-preaching missionary who brought the Light of the world, Jesus Christ, to the Irish people who were yet in the darkness of paganism. Numerous citations from Catholic, Baptist, Protestant, and secular sources, as well as the authentic writings of Patrick himself, prove Dr. Wimbish’s contentions. He asserts: “We have in hand now 140 letters of Pope Leo the Great and we have not found a line written by him or any other Pope or any other man rejoicing over the wonderful additions to the Roman Church by Patrick and his disciples.”

NEW! (FEBRUARY 23, 2000): “For All the People Wept” by Joseph Tirrito. A gospel message from Nehemiah 8:9 which was originally written as a post to the Evangelicals and Catholics Message Board on AOL. If you think that your good works and/or efforts at keeping the Ten Commandments will get you into heaven, you will see how far you fall short of your goal. The Lord Jesus Christ, by His blood and righteousness, is your only hope.

NEW! (FEBRUARY 23, 2000): “Hath Given Me a Book” by Joseph Tirrito. A brief message from II Chronicles 34:18 which was originally written as a post to the Evangelicals and Catholics Message Board on AOL, meant to challenge both Bible-rejectors and Bible-believers.

Added September 20, 1999: “The Word of Salvation; or, The Thief on the Cross Saved” by Pastor Peter C. Picos. Sermon preached on Good Friday evening, April 2, 1999. Salvation is to be found only in the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, and we must receive it by faith alone in Him alone. It is a personal salvation in which we must ask Him, “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom” (Luke 23:42). And if you will but trust Him, turning to Him in repentance and faith, then He will not turn you away even if you are the vilest sinner, as shown by how He answered the thief on the cross: “Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). AVAILABLE ON AUDIO CASSETTE.

“The One and Only Gospel” by Pastor Peter C. Picos. Sermon preached on Reformation Sunday, November 1, 1998. The exclusivity of the gospel is stressed. Jesus Christ does not ask you to give Him your good works. Rather, He asks you to give Him your sins, trust Him alone by faith alone that His blood alone is sufficient to wash away your sins, and rest in His perfect righteousness as your covering before a just and holy God. A sobering call to repentance to the unsaved, and a charge to the Christian to stand fast in “the faith once delivered unto the saints” for which the Protestant Reformers gave their lives. AVAILABLE ON AUDIO CASSETTE.

“Roman Catholicism” by the late Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. More timely than ever, this sermon by the greatest British preacher of the twentieth century clearly demonstrates why truly born-again, Bible-believing Christians must stand fast for God’s truth and against the ecumenical movement. Christians are given the charge to stand firm for the truths for which Christ’s martyrs gave their lives. Due to notification from the MLJ Recordings Trust regarding copyright, we have removed the sermon from our site. However, we have provided a link to where it is still available.

“Luther's Conversion” by Horatius Bonar. This is a very brief but nevertheless classic account of how Martin Luther struggled with sin and became a Christian, as he saw that “the just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17). Written by one of the greatest preachers of the nineteenth century, it is a powerful testimony to the grace of God and makes for great use as a gospel tract in your witnessing.

“How I Became a Christian.” This is Joseph Tirrito’s testimony of his conversion to Christ, as he delivered it at Northfield Baptist Church on Sunday, June 28, 1998. AVAILABLE ON AUDIO CASSETTE. Mr. Tirrito is our organist and manages our website, and you can e-mail him at Dirrito@aol.com.
